The Packard experience is always satisfying, not only because Packard made sure that its designs were fully developed but also because Packard employed nothing but the finest materials, components and skilled craftsmen to machine, assemble, fabricate and finish its automobiles. This 1940 One-Twenty Convertible Coupe (body style 1399) is an excellent example of the core of Packard's diverse 1940 product line, combining the quality of Packard construction on a 127" wheelbase with the 282 cubic inch, 120 brake horsepower engine that balanced fuel economy with performance and smoothness. The success of the formula is evident in the production numbers: in 1940 28,320 One-Twenty Packards were built, up from 17,647 in 1939. Sold new in Santa Barbara, California, it comes with a charming history by the owner-restorer of its active, eventful life. After the first owner's death in 1941 it was sold to Stephen Lackner, also in Santa Barbara. After the war the Lackner family drove it to the east coast and shipped it to Europe where they lived and toured in it for four years. After the excursion it returned to Santa Barbara in the same manner. In the Fifties it was bought by Lackner's brother-in-law, Henri Morgenroth, from whom the owner-restorer in Oxnard, California acquired it in 1961. After driving it locally for several years in 1974 he began its restoration which continued until it was completed in 1990. With plenty of room for five, this is an ideal family car. It is equipped with a factory grille guard, dual remotely-operated spotlights, seat belts, donut chaser radiator mascot, factory grille guard, dual enclosed sidemounts with mirrors and has hubcaps, trim rings and whitewall tires. A display board with photos of the car from its acquisition in 1961 until the restoration was done comes with it. It is finished in burgundy with tan leather upholstery and a tan cloth top and top boot cover. The restoration is very presentable, even after over twenty years and its California history is indicative of its preservation and soundness.
