Few numbers are more magical to a car guy than 427, and when they're in a bright Rally Red Corvette roadster, well, life doesn't get much better. To answer your first question, look again at the price-if the numbers were matching, it would cost three times this much money. The VIN won't tell you much, but the details on this car suggest very strongly that it was originally a 427 car. Today it's an amazing driver that will put the hurt on a lot of newer performance cars, most of whom won't even bother trying after they get a look at the badges on the cowl-induction hood and the sound of the rumbling exhaust. This 1968 Corvette Stingray is finished in correct code 974 Rally Red, and this one is vibrant and bright, without being over-restored. It shows a lovely patina that fits the car perfectly, with a great gloss on the paint that isn't a harsh 21st century look like many freshly painted 'Vettes. The doors open and close properly, and that impressively aggressive hood shuts tight. The chrome bumpers were how this car was designed, so the clean bright pieces on this car are a welcome sight. Glass, lenses, and emblems are all correct and in good condition, with a mixture of original and replacement pieces that all look appropriate on the car-nothing stands out as too old or too new. This car carries the optional code 402 black leather interior, which was a very nice upgrade over the standard vinyl. With comfortable, deep buckets that look like your favorite leather jacket, they're the ideal complement to the slick bodywork. Other cool details include the wood grain steering wheel and options like power windows and a very unusual AM/FM radio, which was a real novelty in 1968. All the gauges look nicely preserved, while all the controls on the center console are fully functional. Overhead, there's a manual black convertible top that stows neatly under the hard boot. That rumbling 427 under the hood wears a correct coat of Chevy Orange paint, bright chrome valve covers, and all the components like the ignition shielding are still in place. The engine shows signs of recent maintenance, with new spark plug wires and coolant hoses, and the entire engine bay is tidy and clean. The casting numbers tell us this is a real 1969 era 427 big block, with suffix code LE and casting number 3955270. The chassis is solid, with only minimal rust and scale, and the dual exhaust system appears to be a factory-style replacement. With a TH400 3-speed automatic, this Corvette is a pleasure to drive and the transmission snaps off crisp shifts at any speed. Recent BFGoodrich T/A radials ride on classic Rally wheels. You simply won't get 427 cubic inches in a Corvette roadster for a better price than this. With several luxury-oriented options, this Corvette is equally at home on the drag strip or out on the town.
