If you look at the numbers, they'll say Tempest. But if you look at the car, it screams Judge! This nicely done 1968 GTO Judge tribute puts one of the greatest muscle car names within reach of those who don't have six-figure budgets for their toys. This one is nicely done, with a lot of authentic details and not just a bunch of stickers on a tired old shell. The Carousel Red paint (which is orange, don't let the name fool you) is bright and vivid in pure 1960s fashion, and the decal package is correct-nobody will mistake this for mom's grocery getter ever again. Most of the details are correct, from the Endura front bumper to the hood tach, to the wing on the trunk lid, all of which will have people doing double takes when they see this one roll into the next cruise night or car show. The interior is rather exceptional in its quality and execution-new foam under fresh seat covers make it look like new, and fresh carpets are dark and clean. The three-instrument dash panel looks odd without a tach, but that's the way they were built when the buyer specified the ultra-cool hood-mounted tachometer. A correct center console features a Hurst T-handle shifter for the TH350 3-speed automatic, and sharp-eyed viewers will note that this one sports factory A/C. For entertainment, a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit and new speakers have been installed. GTO-logo floor mats, a wood steering wheel, and new door panels complete the illusion. The engine is bigger than anything that ever lived in a '68 GTO, a massive 428 cubic inch V8 perhaps stolen from a Bonneville. It's a neat fit in the A-body platform, and if you didn't know better, you'd think it was born there. It wears a coat of Pontiac Turquoise paint, chrome valve covers and air cleaner, and breathes through a giant 4-barrel carburetor. You'll note an interesting combination of options, including A/C and power steering, but no power brakes. The chassis is tidy and clean, but not quite detailed for show, and offers a new dual exhaust system and a fresh gas tank out back. Rally I wheels with correct PMD center caps wear recent BFGoodrich T/A radials, which always look great on vintage muscle. Tribute cars like this are a great way to experience a legend without worrying about damage or theft, and without the sticker shock that accompanies the actual cars. This one will handily outrun a stock GTO, thanks to that big 428 under the hood, and most folks won't know the difference. That's the beauty of the tribute-all the fun without the headaches.
