Buick had always occupied an enviable position within the General Motors corporation selling middle-to-upper level models that were both prestigious and profitable. The early fifties saw a dramatic improvement in Buick’s fortunes to the point where – with 781,296 cars built in 1955 – Buick was firmly established in third place in the American car industry, right behind Chevrolet and Ford.

For 1955, the Series 60 Century was redesigned and became the ‘performer’ in Buick’s model line. It combined the best of what Buick offered – gobs of power from the Roadmaster’s high-performance 236 horsepower engine, wrapped in the lightweight chassis of the Special. All of this added up to a car with agile handling and lots of power.

Like all 1955 Buick models, the Century line was redesigned, with cleaner sides, a more rounded and modern grille and more pronounced fins that were integrated into the rear wings. At the same time, the four ventiports found on the front wing of the Century helped observers distinguish it from the less expensive Special model.

The 1955 Buick Century Convertible Coupé offered here was treated to a complete body-off-the-frame restoration. With the body separated from the frame, the frame was sandblasted then refinished in black. Examination of the undercarriage shows no evidence of rust or rust removal. After being stripped of its original paint, the body was resprayed in dark red metallic. Today the condition of the paint remains quite good, showing only minor imperfections upon close inspection; the paint would benefit from a thorough buffing should its next owner choose to return it to show quality condition once again. Likewise, the body gaps are not perfect, and would benefit from shimming and hinge adjustments should the car return to the concours circuit.

Being an American car from the 1950s, the Century sports no shortage of chrome, most of which was replated during the restoration. Although minor flaws are evident upon close examination, they do not detract significantly from the presentation of the Century convertible.

The red interior remains in excellent restored condition. The dash and instruments are comprised of original pieces, which have largely been restored, and some replacement items. The white convertible top, replaced at the time of restoration, fits well but exhibits minor soiling.

Providing ease of use and a pleasurable driving experience, the Buick is equipped with power steering, power brakes, power seat, power windows, a power top, an AM radio, and Buick’s smooth shifting Power-Glide automatic transmission.

The engine bay shows signs of road use, as the Buick has been a reliable driver since its restoration and during its tenure at the Ecclestone Collection. At the time of publication of this catalogue the carburettor and fuel pump were being rebuilt, to ensure that the Buick would be in fine running order for the auction.

Collectors today appreciate Buick’s innovative styling, and many appreciate the fact that there are far fewer surviving Buicks than other, higher volume American marques. A period Buick sales catalogue noted, ‘Drive the Century and you command thrills that set the pulse of even a sports car enthusiast to pounding’ – a statement that still holds true today.
