Engine No. 911 F0513

From the Italian Collector Sig. Giuseppe Prevosti

350bhp, 5,359cc V-8 engine, five-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension, deDion rear axle with longitudinal and transverse links and coil springs, four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 98.4in. (2,499mm).

The Iso name is derived from the Isothermos refrigerators that Renzo Rivolta started building before World War II. Following the war Rivolta recognized another Italian consumer need, this time for transportation. Starting with scooters, Rivolta quickly expanded to the Isetta bubble-cars, later licensed to BMW. With the proceeds of the BMW-Isetta deal and continuing refrigerator sales, Renzo Rivolta, like many Italian industrialists, resolved to build a proper grand touring car. The Iso Rivolta, a Bertone-styled four-seat coupé, appeared in 1962 at the Turin motor show, and was constructed at a new plant near Milan. A sportier two-seat Grifo arrived the following year and went on sale in 1965.

Rivolta relied upon American engines to give his cars both exceptional performance and great reliability. The Grifo had all the elements of success: the perfected Chevy small block V-8 engine and gearbox from the Corvette, a competent chassis designed by one of Italy’s greatest automotive engineers, 250 GTO designer Giotto Bizzarrini, packaged under a svelte Bertone body designed by Giorgio Giugiaro. According to Motor Trend, Bertone referred to the production Iso Grifo Coupé as his masterpiece. With a height of less than 1.2 metres, an aggressive quad-headlight design, standard alloy wheels, and sporty styling details such as engine cooling grids on the wings, the Grifo’s design was certainly very impressive.

Although it was twice the price of a Corvette in the US, it was also considerably lighter and boasted superior technical sophistication. The lightweight tube frame chassis boasted four-wheel disc brakes, a deDion rear axle with inboard-mounted brakes and full coil spring suspension. The 327 cubic inch V-8 was also offered with greater compression, thereby increasing horsepower from 300 to 340, and up to 350 by 1967. With a top speed of over 265 kilometres per hour, the Iso Grifo was capable of the same tremendous performance as its competition at Ferrari. Only 471 Grifos were ever produced over a healthy production run that lasted until 1974.

The Iso Grifo offered here is equipped with the optional 350 horsepower version of the Corvette Turbofire V-8 engine. The car was purchased by Oliver Kuttner of Grifon Motor Cars and subsequently sold to Sig. Prevosti, who had it restored to concourse standard between 1994 and 1997 by renowned Iso and Bizzarrini specialist, Salvatore Diomante of Turin.

The body is very straight, finished in attractive burgundy with chrome sills and silver painted wheels. The paint looks fresh and is free of imperfections as is the chrome, which was obviously replaced during restoration.

The interior has also been fully restored, shows no signs of wear, and is finished in tan leather with matching carpets. Every component is as new and period correct from the instrumentation to the radio.

The engine bay also presents very well and indicates that this car has covered very little mileage since restoration. During a recent test drive, the car ran and drove very well, starting readily and idling very smoothly.

For many enthusiasts, the Iso Grifo represents the best of both worlds – Italian styling combined with the performance of an American V-8. Marque experts report that the only downside can be the cost of restoration, but this particular example, expertly restored by Salvatore Diomante, should prove both solid and reliable. Exceptional styling and performance only add to the experience.
