The Porsche 924 was produced between 1976 to 1988. A two-door, 2+2 coupé, the 924 replaced the 914 as the company's entry-level model, and was the model that finally retired the 912. It was the first Porsche model powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted engine to make production easier. The front-engine, rear wheel drive arrangement was normal for most other manufacturers, but it was unusual for Porsche having previously only used mid- or rear-mounted engines of a boxer configuration, all of which had been air-cooled. Large numbers were produced in various levels of equipment and performance but it was, arguably, the GTS that was the Gefrieren on the Kuchen!
The Porsche 924 GTS is the ultimate road legal 924, only 59 were made and 15 of these were in clubsport specification. All were finished in Red and were lefthand drive. The GTS was fitted with poly wings, bumpers and light weight aluminium doors and bonnet. It was fitted with a thinner bonded in glass windscreen, plexiglass side windows and rear bootlid. Perspex fixed headlights to give extra space under the bonnet for the larger front mounted intercooler and a 120 litre fuel tank and revised rear suspension of coil spring set up instead of torsion bars. Brakes were as those fitted to the 911 Turbo of the period but with cross drilled vented discs and a 40% Limited slip differential.
The interior consists of lightweight sports seats which were felt covered 935 racing seats, door panels and no rear seat, with the bare minimum of equipment. The price new was £24,000 which was quite a sum if you consider the standard 924 of the period sold for £9,000.

Known History

Originally starting life as a very respectable 924 Turbo, the owner at the time, had a burning desire to own a GTS. The now huge sums commanded by these extremely rare cars made it prohibitive however and so with much research and dedication, he set about recreating one, and to his great credit, has made rather a good job of it. Details like the seats, Perspex windows and lack of rear seats are all to be found. In fact, the spare wheel has been disposed of and boot lining removed, as it should be. It is indeed a red, lefthand drive, manual GTS tribute. The very highest form of flattery. There are additional competition belts and numerous other correct details right down to the plaque on the back detailing ‘GTS’. Supplied with a file of bills and invoices as well as a handbook, workshop manual cd and an unstamped Porsche service history book, this striking example has also undergone a recent brake and clutch master cylinder replacement as well as new brake pads and MoT - a rare beast.
