1962 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Aluminum Reconfiguration
s/n 3905 GT, Engine no. 3905
Rosso Corsa with Black Leather

Today, the original pontoon fendered Ferrari 250 Testa Rossas are among the world`s most historically significant and valuable cars. They are instantly recognizable as Ferrari`s signature sports racing car of the late 1950s and were exceptionally successful in international motor racing right from their introduction in 1957. Ferrari was victorious with the Testa Rossa at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958, 1959, and 1961. In total, just 21 pontoon fendered 250 TRs were produced- 19 of which were supplied to Ferrari`s customers and two were retained for racing by the factory. Today, the majority of the original 250 TRs have long since been acquired by sophisticated collectors such as Ralph Lauren and are financially out-of-reach for the general public. It is no wonder that high quality reconfigurations, carrying Ferrari serial numbers, using alloy bodies, and Ferrari chassis of a similar era have garnered the interest of Ferrari enthusiasts who seek the experience of owning and driving one of the world`s most important automobiles without the out-of-reach price tag.

Using 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE chassis and engine number 3905, this beautiful alloy bodied example achieves just that. The body, formed in Italy by Giordanengo, was sent with the modified GTE chassis to the US where it was ultimately finished by respected Ferrari concours perfectionist Greg Jones. Mr. Jones also rebuilt the Ferrari V12 power plant to fresh GTE specification with the addition of 6 Weber downdraft carburetors, which is how a Factory 250 TRs would have been equipped. Largely accurate- dimensionally and mechanically, this extremely fresh example is ready for enjoyment.

With virtually no miles (approximately 500) on the car since its reconfiguration to TR specifications, this car is like new in all respects. The body is straight and has never been damaged or repaired. The paint work was an extremely high caliber job, and is virtually flawless. With the exception of one mark on each side of the front inner fender wells, there are no chips or scratches anywhere on the car. This car wears removable white number balls, as many of competition cars did in period. The Ferrari shields are also removable. The enclosed headlights and Plexiglas windshield are in excellent condition. This example sits on silver painted Borrani wire wheels with Ferrari three-ear chrome knock offs.

The interior is also like new, and is trimmed in high quality black leather with red piping. The gauges are extremely correct in period appearance, and are joined by a Jaeger mechanical tachometer which greatly adds to the feeling of authenticity. As would be the case with an original 250 TR, this car has a period correct, three spoke wood rimmed steering wheel which was probably refinished as part of the restoration and reconfiguration. The fuse box has been mounted to the passenger`s dashboard area, which was a design technique employed by the Ferrari factory for quick trouble shooting during endurance races.

Both the engine compartment and underside are completely detailed, and are like new in appearance. Correct finishes have been applied where appropriate, including the red crackle finish on the valve covers from which the name Testa Rossa, or `Red Head` in English, is derived. The highly detailed nature of the underside confirms that this example has seen minimal use since it was created. It has never been driven in the rain or off a paved surface, and looks new above and below.

The rear storage area reveals the beautifully riveted, large capacity fuel tank as would be the case on a factory built car.

Mechanically, the car is very fresh and fully sorted. The engine, rebuilt by Greg Jones to GTE specs, starts easily and runs smooth with excellent oil pressure and minimal smoke, if any. While perhaps not as downright powerful as a TR spec motor, with 6 Webers and a much lighter curb weight than a GTE, this car accelerates much more quickly than a GTE, and has a very wide torque curve. Interestingly, this car carries the disc brake assemblies from the GTE which it was built from, and has considerably more stopping ability than the original pontoon Testa Rossas which were all equipped with drum brakes. The four- speed, all syncro transmission is also a Ferrari unit lifted directly from the GTE chassis and has excellent syncros throughout.

The driving experience of this high quality reconfiguration is largely similar to that of a real 250 TR. The driver ergonomics are quite comfortable, which is not always the case when cars are converted to different format as is the case here. The brakes, clutch, transmission, suspension, and gauges all work as they were designed to.

High quality replicas are being accepted to a growing number of events here in North America. This year, a nearly identical car was accepted to participate in both the California Mille and the Colorado Grand. As an affordable and exhilarating ticket to some of the premier historic car events in the US an abroad, these largely accurate, high quality, aluminum bodied replicas have become an industry accepted alternative to the real thing.
