After the successful era of the 230, 250 and 280SL series it became apparent to Mercedes-Benz that a new model would be required. This was due not only to changing tastes and styles but more importantly ever increasing safety and emission controls. With this in mind, the new model would have to be stronger, heavier and therefore require a larger engine. Mercedes-Benz took an important step in its own future in 1971. Manufactured for almost two full decades, from 1971 to 1989, Mercedes' highly regarded Type R107 SL Roadster has made history in a big way. Being an advanced design, it still looks contemporary today, firmly ensconced in its rightful place as the most successful open-air motorcar ever built by Daimler-Benz. It was quite a different car, expanded in every way over the 'pagoda roof' SL and considerably improved in safety areas. Initially, the new SL was powered by Mercedes-Benz's 3.5-litre V8 and subsequently it was upgraded to 3.8 litres; modernised suspension featured a semi-trailing-arm rear-end, and there was standard power-steering, and a popular optional automatic gearbox.

This smart 380 SL was manufactured in 1982 and is supplied with both a soft top and the desirable hard top. Delightfully finished in cream with a brown interior, and fitted with a CD stereo system, it comes with the all important MoT test certificate valid until October 2008 and V5 registration document. Currently with its third owner, this is a smart and eminently practical example of this eternally popular, long lasting Mercedes-Benz sports.
