Completed on December 30th, of 1952, s/n 0246AL was the forth of just six special coachbuilt Lampredi engined `long block` road cars built for Ferraris elite clientele. This example was first displayed as the 1953 Geneva Auto Show car, and was probably also used at the Paris Auto Show in `53. By early 1954 it had been sold to Steve A. Briggs in the USA who won first in class at a Wilmot Hills Race Course concours event in Wisconsin in 1954. The car was treated to a very high quality restoration by Tom Valerio in the US in the late 1980s and has since been voted ``Best Vintage Ferrari`` and ``Judges Choice`` when shown at the Winter Park Concours D`Elegance in October of 2006. More recently it has been proudly displayed at the Cavallino Classic. The condition inside and out remains spectacular, a testament to the quality of the restorative work performed.

The 342 America was Ferrari`s most exclusive model of the time and represents the first series of Speciales designed by Pinninfarina. Only six were built, one bodied by Vignale, and the remaining five by Pinninfarina. Each car boasts unique details differentiating one from another. Both King Leopold of Belgium and Enzo Ferrari ordered one for themselves.

The 342s employed technological improvements over the earlier models. 342s were wider and longer (2,650mm wheelbase) than the 212 and 340 series cars, and carried the larger Aurelio Lampredi designed cast aluminum `long block` 4.1 liter engine which was the basis for Ferrari`s Gran Prix cars of the early 1950s. Ferrari acknowledged the competition heritage of the Lampredi designed V-12 and numbered the 342 series with even serial numbers which otherwise only appeared on racing cars of the era. Power was fed through the new, all synchromesh, 4-speed transmission- another improvement over the previous series.

Sold new to Franco Fassio of Genoa, Italy, this car came to the US in early 1954. In 1958 it was acquired by William R. Peters and remained in his care for the next 31 years. The was refinished in its present and period correct black/beige color scheme in 1989 before being sold at over $1.25 million USD to a significant Belgian collection in 1990. It remained in this collection before retuning to the US in 2004 where it has been shown with pride and many of North America`s premier classis car venues.

This car shares the distinct double hood air intakes with the 342 Cabriolet built for King Leopold, although it could be argued that they are more pleasantly integrated on this example. The bumpers are mounted low on the body and formed to the front and rear edges of the coachwork.

The condition of this example is representative of a very high quality restoration done some years, but very few miles ago. The repaint was a very high quality job and has a very fine luster. There are no significant flaws anywhere on the car. There is no evidence that the body has ever been damaged or repaired (historical records confirm this) and is extremely straight accordingly. The door, hood, and truck gaps are excellent. The brightwork- bumpers, headlight bezels, window surrounds, and aluminum Borrani wire wheels- are all outstanding and have a freshly refinished appearance. The car sits on good, period correct Michelin X 185R15 tires.

The interior and trunk have both been restored and are in excellent condition. The interior is beautifully simplistic with enlarged tachometer and speedometer dominating the dashboard behind the correct flat Nardi wood wheel. High quality wool carpet and headliner material is fitted, all of which is in fantastic condition throughout. The seats, door panels, and rear package tray are trimmed in nearly flawless beige leather uniform in texture, completing the subtle, sparse styling of the interior. The rear seats fold out to functionally accommodate youngsters when traveling to and from events.

The engine bay was also restored and is largely unchanged from new in equipment. The magnificent Lampredi power plant is a matching numbers unit to this chassis. The original generator and Magneti Marelli ignition system and wiring remain. The Marchal horns and compressor, along with the Weber 40DCF3 carburetors with correct air cleaners are in place. This car even has a period accurate radiator cap. The overall condition of the engine bay is that of an older restoration which is more than presentable.

Today the odometer shows just 44.007 kilometers, which is appears to be accurate, and supported by historical records. One of the most rare of all production Ferraris to date, the 342 America was a special car for Ferrari`s elite clientele. Today, it is a blue chip investment piece with elegant and timeless styling, eligible for virtually any important car event in the world including the Mille Miglia.
