1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 `Daytona` Spyder

Giallo Dino with Tan Interior

Road and Track described the 365GTB/4 as ``the best sports car in the world-or the best GT. Take your choice; it`s both.``, and indeed it remains one of the greatest and most legendary cars ever made. With just 124 genuine `Daytona` Spyders produced, they are among the most collectable Ferrari road cars of the era. Even among that limited group, this particular car is unique, and is an absolutely unrepeatable find. As thirty-five year old high-value cars, most Daytona Spyders have seen comprehensive restorations, have been through numerous ordeals, or both. This example, which effectively remains a one-owner 47,000-mile California car with irreproachable provenance and history, has seen no such mistreatment, but instead is a characterful and strikingly original car. There are subtle signs everywhere of this car`s interesting story and experiences, making this example genuinely irreplaceable. It is truly a historical artifact, not only representing the quintessential contemporary high-performance open Ferrari, but also serving as a model for what the Daytona was supposed to be according to Maranello, rather than a subsequent restorer. This car has had no liberties taken, but instead remains an honest car that faithfully portrays the original intentions and specifications from the factory. As such, this car will surely appeal to the seasoned connoisseur who can appreciate this car`s impeccable originality.

Constructed in July of 1971, this particular car was the 8th example built. It was made for the US market and equipped at the factory with air conditioning. It was sold new through Hollywood Sports Cars to Lou Adler, founder of Ode Records, record producer, and director whose credits have included the Mamas and the Papas, Carole King, Sam Cooke, and others. Adler owned the car for almost three and a half decades, though it was stored for about a decade, starting in 1995. It has covered less than 47,250 miles from new.

Cosmetically, the car is strikingly original in condition when compared to other Daytona Spyders. The car is unmolested, completely free of corrosion, and extremely straight. The panel fit and gaps are excellent, and the paint has survived well, although some touch up has probably be carried out in selected areas as necessary over the years. It has good luster and the blemishes are limited to a few scratches, door edge chips, and one large chip on the leading edge of the grille. There are a handful of other small blemishes about the car. The chrome is in original condition and shows some pitting, but remains attractive. One of the turn signal lenses is cracked, but two excellent original ones are included in boxes. The remainder of the glass and lenses is very good, with some light wiper marks to the windscreen. The car retains is original blue six-digit license plate, and has been fitted with a pair of nine-inch rear `Boxer` wheels, though the originals are included as well. All are fitted with correct Michelin XWX tires.

The interior is also extremely original, with original dashboard, upholstery, and carpet. The dashboard is faded, but is original and is free from water marks, shrinkage, or warping. The leather is intact and remains supple, but shows some patina and soiling, while the carpets are in fine condition, with light discoloration. The correct retractable sun visors are still in place, and when the car was new, Mr. Adler had a custom speaker enclosure installed behind the seats, as well as a pair of auxiliary amplifiers. The enclosure was finished in the same carpet as the rest of the interior and the speaker covers are done in the same leather and perforation style as is featured in the factory locations, lending the enclosure a very tasteful factory look. Even the area of the top boot that covers the enclosure was perforated in the same style. The original top itself is showing some age in several places, and a pair of period seat belts was installed.

The trunk and engine compartment are both original and well-kept, with some typical aging. There are a few places where the stitching is coming apart in the trunk, and some worn areas to the felt lining. The engine compartment is predominantly original and correct, with correct spark plug leads and airbox hardware, and an upgrade to Permatune electronic ignition was performed as well. The car comes the original spare, jack (still wrapped in factory paper), and tool roll, which is partially complete.

In spite of their rarity, or perhaps because of it, Daytona Spyders found their way onto the silver screen on such memorable occasions as in `The Gumball Rally` (who can forget Raul Julia`s opinions on the topic of Italian driving: ``What is behind you is not important!``) and `Miami Vice` (even if that was a replica). As a result of the collector car boom of the late 80`s, many coupes were decapitated to replicate this legendary car and consequently, a genuine Spyder is an even more remarkable find today. They are certainly among the most coveted and usable road-going Ferraris ever built, and this car is an exceptional opportunity to acquire an unmolested and `unred` Daytona Spyder.
