For the debut of its new MGA in 1955, MG wisely chose that year's Le Mans 24 Hours Race; after a succession of open-wheeled models there were fears of an adverse reaction to such a streamlined car and it was felt that by showing the MGA in competition first the aerodynamic shape would be accepted as a performance essential. In July 1959 the 1,489cc engined MGA became the MGA 1600 with a 1,588cc engine and standard Lockheed front disc brakes; the power output was now 80bhp and more torque gave improved performance.

This superlative example was imported into Italy by a private owner and restored over a period of three years between 1996 and 1999. All of the parts used during the restoration were ordered from specialists in Great Britain The car has been driven some mere 2,900 kilometres since this work was completed, including participation in the 2005 Winter Marathon in Madonna Di Campiglio, Italy, in 2005. Finished in white with red interior and described by its owner as "like new", the car is accompanied by the Italian libretto, owner's certificate, ASI certification and FIVA papers.
