Fringe-top surreys were developed relatively late in the carriage era. The first ones appeared in the United States in the late 1860s and were generally intended for family use. This particular three-bench example would have certainly been quite suitable for a large family. It is in very presentable condition, with the lovely coachwork finished in gloss black, and the undercarriage, wheels and shafts painted in burgundy. The interior is finished in plush burgundy velour, with clear vinyl seat covers to protect the cushions. This particular example has transverse fully-elliptic leaf springs at the front and is fitted with dual, longitudinally-mounted, and fully-elliptic leaf springs at the rear.

This carriage certainly brings to life the charm of horse drawn vehicles.
