Introduced in October of 1908 as a completely new offering from Ford, the Model T remained in production in much the same form for 19 years, during which time 15 million examples were built. While it was initially offered at a staggering sum of $850 in 1909, its price dropped as low as $265 by the 1920s, facilitated of course by the efficient assembly line production systems pioneered by Henry Ford himself.

The first 2,500 examples had water pumps built into the engine, and the first 800 featured two foot pedals and two control levers. After this initial run however, the Model T was effectively standardized and the engine was cooled by thermosyphon action. Body types and styling remained virtually unchanged, although the fenders had rounded fronts with small bills. Touring cars were offered in both green and red, although red was not offered after June of 1909, and certainly not by 1914, when the pervasive Japan Black enamel was used on nearly every Model T.

This 1909 Model T Touring was acquired in 2003, having been restored by Model T expert Eric Edwards of Edwards Antique Automobiles International. Finished predominantly in red with black trim and gold pin striping, the paint is virtually show quality throughout and has been professionally applied. All brass pieces, from the radiator shell to the steering wheel spokes and door handles, have been polished to a lovely, lustrous finish. The black vinyl convertible top is also in impressive condition and devoid of any signs of aging, while the front and rear seats have been upholstered in matching black, diamond-tufted leather. Every component of the engine bay, including the refinished black engine block, was propely restored and detailed. The same can be said for the undercarriage, which was finished to show quality standards and retains its nice, glossy appearance.

While Ford ’ s “ Tin Lizzie ” has become a relatively affordable collector car, a limited few examples stand out from their peers by sheer virtue of their exceptional condition. As a member of this rarified group, Mr. Wiseman ’ s Model T Touring is as new and exhibits tremendous attention to detail and impressive, professional workmanship.
