In the 1950s, automobiles moved further away from basic transportation for the masses and limited-production luxury cars for the rich. The postwar middle class wanted style, power and comfort in their cars as never before. Detroit answered the call with sleeker, faster, better equipped offerings to meet this growing need.

The family man who wanted the sexiness of a convertible with the practicality of a hard roof now had the two- door hardtop as an option. It had the appearance of a convertible with the top raised and told the neighbors that he wasn ’ t just the practical 9-to-5 guy they may have thought him to be. Oldsmobile wanted to capture that buyer as much as any other maker, and the Holiday coupe, introduced in 1956 and featuring a new “ low-level look ” , handsomely fit the bill.

With a reputation for the “ Rocket V8 ” engine won on the race tracks of NASCAR, the buyer of a Starfire Ninety- Eight could live out his fantasies of excitement and have the luxury of brocade and leather seats, power accessories and enough style to impress at the golf club.

The 1957 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe offered from the Wiseman Collection is a low mileage, largely original example. It is believed that this Ninety-Eight was purchased new by the acting Governor of Arizona. The white paint is quite presentable, with a few minor imperfections visible on various sections of the bodywork. The extensive chrome trim shows well, with some pitting on the taillight bezels. A continental kit is fitted to the rear bumper, adding a bit of dashing style. Inside, the original seats feature unworn brocade fabric, with nicely patinated leather surfaces. The steering wheel and dashboard padding are also original and show some aging. A minor tear in the headliner is also visible. The trunk even has the original jacking instructions decal.

This car is fully equipped with a Hydra-Matic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power seat, power windows, a factory clock, radio with power antenna and fender skirts. A wonderfully original example of mid- century upper middle class sporting style, it is ready to enjoy and preserve for the future.
