Cadillac celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1953. The cars it presented to the market for this important milestone were emblematic of its stature as “ The Standard of the World. ” Big, luxuriously equipped, opulently trimmed and powerful, the 1953 Cadillacs deserved their position at the top of General Motors ’ line.

The heart of the matter was Cadillac ’ s big, powerful 331 cubic inch V8 overhead valve engine. Introduced in 1949, it had developed into a real powerhouse: strong, reliable and full of gusto. Cadillac knew then – and has only recently rediscovered – that its reputation depended as much upon performance as upon luxurious materials, comfortable ride and elegant styling.

Cadillac ’ s styling supported its image. The 1953 Cadillacs were the triumphs of Harley Earl ’ s design philosophy: big, flashy and distinctive. It was the visual statement that matched the performance statement of the Cadillac V8. Hooded headlights flanked the big, bold grille and massive bumper with bullet-shaped Dagmars. Dagmars apparently owe their appearance and prominence to Earl ’ s fascination with airplanes, detailing that also carried over to the rear fenders which began with chrome trim suggestive of airplane intakes and ended with rudder-like fins containing the taillights.

The Wiseman Collection 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe DeVille is a highly original example with only 20,421 miles showing on the odometer. The condition of the paint and the chrome suggests that they may be original. There is little question, however, that the two-tone green leather with cloth interior is all original, as it shows some patina conducive to a 20,000 mile car that has been properly stored for half a century. The dash, instrument panel, radio and various control knobs are all in very good condition.

The engine bay does show minor signs of road use yet maintains a low-mileage appearance. Likewise, the undercarriage is unrestored; it is rust free and still has its original factory undercoating.

The Cadillac is equipped with an automatic transmission, power steering, power windows, power seats, automatic headlight dimmer, factory clock and radio, factory remote oil filter, back-up lights, fender skirts, wire spoke wheel covers and wide whitewall tires. All of these wonderful features contribute to the appeal of this highly original low-mileage Coupe DeVille.
