By the mid-fifties, General Motors had established what was arguably its strongest lineup ever. With Cadillac at the top and Chevrolet at the bottom, Oldsmobile helped bridge the gap by offering a line of cars that were a unique combination of performance and luxury for the upper middle class market. The Ninety-Eight was the top of the line, with the most powerful engine matched with power steering, brakes, dual exhausts, and Hydra-Matic transmission, first introduced by Oldsmobile in 1940.

Oldsmobile ĺ s offerings for 1958 were newly styled, with dramatic use of chrome trim on the sides to accent their length, especially lavish on the Ninety-Eight. It was available in a quartet of models, a four-door sedan, two-door Holiday Coupe, Convertible and Holiday four-door hardtop. GM had introduced the four-door hardtop in 1955 on the Buick Super and Roadmaster as well as the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight. The pillarless sedans were a testament to the engineering prowess of American automakers of the mid-century and conveyed the sporty look of a coupe or convertible to the more practical standard sedan.

The Oldsmobile offered here is one such four-door hardtop, a very original low-mileage example of this range- topping model. Finished in a very subtle cream with a light green roof, its interior complements the theme with seats covered in a rich green brocade fabric with green and white leather borders. It is fully equipped, with factory air conditioning, power windows, power seat, power antenna, factory radio and clock.

The paintwork, which appears to be original, is in very good condition, showing minor road wear as would be expected in a car that has never been restored. The interior is clean and complete, down to what appears to be the original carpeting. It is easy to believe the indicated mileage of fewer than 40,000 when looking under the hood and in the trunk. Both areas appear the way you would expect an honest, unmolested, well cared for example to look, with all factory installed components present and complete.

This Ninety-Eight represents a rare opportunity for the next owner to acquire an almost time capsule example of this aristocratic 1950s luxury car.
