Gregorie's esteemed convertible displays the benefit of a nut-and-bolt restoration and meticulous care by renowned collectors. By the early 1990s, this Sportsman was owned by Frank Burch of Arizona. Engaging some of the best experts from around the country, Mr. Burch embarked on an expert restoration of the mechanical and cosmetic components of the car. Entrusting the woodwork to Roger James of D&D Classic Automobile Restoration in Covington, Ohio, the firm used fresh-cut maple that was grain-matched and kiln-dried to original specifications before fitting it to the framework of the exterior paneling. Over $10,000 is believed to have been invested in the chassis restoration alone, including a rebuild of the Columbia overdrive by Dan Craybill of California. Interior specialist Jerry Brown of California installed correct red leather upholstery with French stitching, and Bob Brown's Sportsman Restoration shop in Sedro Woolley, Washington, consulted on numerous mechanical systems and parts. In 1997, the car was sold to renowned collector Charles Cawley, before subsequently being acquired by Frank Johnson of Arizona, and then Allen Blackmore of California. Since being acquired by the consignor, an avid collector of fine American and European cars, this stunning Sportsman has been consistently stored in a temperature- and humidity-controlled garage, assuring continued preservation of the finely restored woodwork. The car has also been recently serviced by Kevin Westmoreland of Performance Restoration in Cleveland, Georgia, a renowned expert preferred by a number of respected collectors. A highly respected authority on the Sportsman model, Mr. Westmoreland attests that this car is one of the best examples he has seen. Rare even among the ranks of Woodies, this Sportsman is one of only 2,250 examples produced in 1947. It features a number of desirable original amenities, including the fresh-air heater system, under-hood lights, a back-up light, a foot-controlled period AM radio and floor mats with carpet inserts. On close inspection, the level of craftsmanship is immediately apparent and most likely exceeds its original build quality. Accompanied by a set of tools, this beautiful Sportsman convertible is a wonderful example that offers its next owner instant cachet within classic Ford circles.
