Combining the long hood, low stance, sweeping fenders, oversized headlights, cut-down doors, folding windshield and large wire wheels, Jaguar designers created an exhilarating overall effect. Benefitting from its low curb weight and 125 bhp, the car was able to achieve a top speed of 100 mph ? hence the name SS 100. Exciting from every angle, it has been a dream car sought by enthusiasts since it was first built over 70 years ago. This beautifully presented SS 100 was constructed in January 1939, close to the end of the limited 118-example run of the pre-war 3 1/2 Litre Jaguar. According to a copy of the Jaguar Heritage Certificate, 39098 left the factory equipped with engine number M 1080 E, which it retains today. Originally finished in Pillar Box Red with red upholstery, this SS 100 was dispatched on January 28, 1939, and distributed through Henlys Limited of London to its first owner. By the 1960s, the Jaguar had resurfaced in California. Period photos show the car with early black California license plates, finished in black over red leather, equipped with leather hood straps and even external exhaust routing ? such liberties were frequently taken in the mid-century California sports car culture. It was around then that the car came to the attention of renowned collector Henry Petronis. He recalls that, when it was nearly new, the SS 100 had been owned by a gentleman in California, who was drafted into WWII. Before reporting for training, the car was placed in a storage crate to await the owner?s return from a tour of duty. When he did not return home, the fallen serviceman?s parents kept the car for a number of years before trading it, crate and all, to a real estate developer as partial payment on a new home. Mr. Petronis purchased the Jaguar from the developer, who informed him of the car?s history. After enjoying the car in its unrestored state, the decision was made to have a full restoration performed on the roadster. A year or more later, after determining that the restorer was not performing satisfactorily, Mr. Petronis retrieved the SS 100 in its then disassembled state. Mr. Petronis commissioned the renowned David George of D.L. George Coachworks in Cochranville, Pennsylvania, to take over the restoration. The work commenced with the preparation of a list of parts to be sourced and work to be done, and an extensive file documenting the process remains on file in the D.L. George archives. When the car was delivered to the Cochranville facility in 2003, work began in earnest. The chassis was stripped, aligned, prepped and painted in ?????its original red, as were the axles, springs, shock absorbers and steering components. The sporting red undercarriage is the perfect complement to the classic British Racing Green that was chosen for the beautifully prepared coachwork. Mr. George even recalls repairing the bonnet panels where the exhaust had been routed decades before. Trimmed with red leather and a black canvas top, 39098 proudly displays the quintessential colors for the model. In 2007, after the car had been assembled and road-tested, the shining SS 100 was returned to its home in the Petronis collection for the first time in nearly a decade. Later that year, Mr. and Mrs. Petronis took the freshly restored Roadster to California and exhibited it on the lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance. After its debut in California, the striking Jaguar was next seen on display at the elegant St. Michaels Concours in Maryland. Recently, Henry Petronis sold some cars from his collection to a well-known California collector of sport and racing cars with 39098 among them. In 2011, 39098 was sold to a major collector in Florida. Today, the car stands ready to be enjoyed on the show field and on the road. For years, the Jaguar SS 100 has been on the short list of many collectors as an essential sports car to own. Their exciting design and robust performance make them an excellent choice for vintage events and at the most respected gatherings of classic motorcars. Having been restored to a high standard mechanically and cosmetically, 39098 has to be regarded as one of the most beautiful of the famed SS 100 3 1/2-Litre series to come to auction in many years.
