Known History

1963 Falcon Competition Mk. III

ID no. FS387765

Miata Blue with Black Seats

This car is not currently located at Fantasy Junction, but is available and can be viewed by appointment.

Existing only from 1957 to 1964, Falcon cars began by producing fiberglass bodies, before producing their own cars. The race cars employed tubular steel chassis and choice of Ford engines, Climax, or MGA engines.

This particular car is a Competition Mk. III model, the only surviving one known to the Falcon register and believed by the registrar to be the only surviving Mk. III extant. It was comprehensively restored a few years ago by Specialty Fabrication at a cost exceeding $60,000. As part of the restoration, a new frame was fabricated in steel tubes like the original, but strategically upgraded to improve its strength with thicker gauge steel (1.25 by .095 4130 chrome moly), triangular bracing elements, and an improved integrated roll bar. The engine is 1300cc dry sump Cortina unit built by Jennings and features six bolt tufftrided crankshaft, Venolia pistons and special camshaft. Steel rods, Gilmer drive, Deves rings, Duplex timing chain and sprockets, dual valve springs, and a custom ceramic coated header system. The engine was built with durability and ease of maintenance in mind, rather than maximum power and high level of tuning. The restoration has 3 to 4 race weekends since completion and while the engine may benefit from freshening, the car remains race ready, needing only tires and a few small adjustments.

Other noteworthy work includes a custom built radiator and tanks, hand-built custom coil-over suspension system, a wide ratio Cortina transmission and narrowed rear end with Summers Brothers axles, Tilton clutch and flywheel, and Panasport minilite wheels.

The car displays good race cosmetics, with some chipping to the paintwork. The wheels are in good shape and the interior is tidy and well-executed. This example is fitted with period accurate Smiths gauges and a reliable and easy to read Auto Meter tachometer. The car with easy accommodate a driver up to about six feet in height, possibly larger with light modifications to the pedal box.

At the full asking price this example comes with the original frame, engine, transmission, wire wheels, and gas tank. Replacement Falcon bodies are available in the UK. This car has a VARA log book, and should be a welcome entrant in HMSA, General Racing, CSRG, and HSR events in the USA, as well as other venues abroad. This example proven to be quite competitive in VARA`s E/SR category where it has twice been the season champion.

Interesting trades considered.
