The Roadster is Porsche 356A Convertible D replica built by Intermeccanica of Vancouver, BC.

A few years ago I was on a Typ 356 Club rally, and one of the members urged me to drive his Intermeccanica .(Didn't know it was a replica until he told me) I was completely astonished at the build quality and performance of this car. It is quieter, faster, smoother running and more comfortable than the '59 Porsche, and is squeak and rattle free. Last year, I ordered a new one for a customer, and when it came, I was hooked. Now the Intermeccanica company has allowed us to represent them in our area, and we have this example for you to drive and see for yourself.

Intermeccanica is a coachbuilder founded in the late 60's by Frank Reisner in Turin Italy. They designed and built low-volume production cars for various customers, including the 1962 Apollo, the 1965 Italia, the Fitch Sprint, and the 1970 Indra. Now located in Vancouver, BC, and run by Henry Reisner, they build a few different models, including about 12 Roadsters per year.

We had a lot of fun with the option list, and set the car up as a weekend tourer or 1000 rally conveyance, with comfort and reliablity the main objectives.

The base car is a fiberglass body on Intermeccanica's own tubular frame, with some engineering advances to improve on the 1959 356: The engine is set slightly forward, the brakes are discs, the suspension is fully independent at the rear, the wheels are 5.5X15, the body fasteners have aluminum receivers imbedded in the fiberglass so the connections are metal-to-metal, the improved heater/defroster unit is fan-driven, the seat belts are 3-point shoulder type with retractors, and it has roll-up windows and door locks. The body is finished with Glasurit two-stage, hand-rubbed and polished out.

We ordered this one with air conditioning, full leather with Spinneybeck Coffeebean hides, Semperit 185/70X15 tires, Derrington-type 15" wood steering wheel, tan German square-weave carpeting, Jaspe cocomats, Happich 93000010A dark brown top with zippered rear window and matching boot with Tenax fasteners, extra aircraft-type sound-deadening package, dash knobs and AC knobs all matching ivory, short bumper guards, and interior door-switched courtesy lights. The optional engine is a blueprinted Type 1 VW using a modern case, 1776-cc pistons, dual Weber IDF carbs with chokes for easier starting, and 12V alternator. This is tuned for strong low and mid-range power, and is well matched to the optional 3.88 final drive gear, giving about 63 MPH at 3,000 rpm.

This car can be replicated in your choice of colors in 8 months for about $60,000. If you dream of a similar car with, lets say, 180 bhp, or if you'd like a 911-powered Speedster or a Kubelwagen replica, let me know. ....
