The Austin 7 sedan mobilized an entire generation of Britons, and so it is no surprise that when the masses wanted to go faster and have fun, they would use the widely available, durable, and reliable 7 as a basis. Since Austin never produced a competition version of the 7, each Special is unique: a singular variation based on the vision and skill of its specific builder. Though the standard Austin 7 was capable of only 35mph, the light weight (just 640 pounds in this case) and tuning of the specials permitted speeds of about 80mph.

This particular car was very thoughtfully conceived and developed to make it a very fine competition car. It features a 4-speed transmission, forged crankshaft, full pressure lubrication system, and hydraulic brakes with stainless steel lines. The engine was offset by 12 degrees to allow the driveshaft to pass next to instead of under the driver, providing both a lower center of gravity, and a more convenient shifting arrangement. To accommodate this, the half shafts are of unequal length as well. A steel tube subframe was also fabricated to support the body and add rigidity to the main frame.

This car has been extensively proven in competition, having raced recently at both the Monterey Historics and the Wine Country Classic. Its prior exploits include many races in England, at such famous places as Brooklands, Silverstone, Oulton Park, Wiscombe Park, and Brighton. The numerous scrutineering tags and stickers are still present from these outings.

Cosmetically, the car is extremely nice condition. The paint is very high quality and shows just a few small blemishes. The suspension is detailed and the wheels are excellent. The tires are period Dunlop Racing items, and a Brooklands windscreen has been installed. The interior is tidy and clean, with a vintage look Auto Meter tachometer. The firewall and dashboard are engine-turned aluminum, and the general feel is very vintage, with a large 4-spoke steering wheel. The interior is even surprisingly roomy, with more than enough space for the average sized man.

The engine shows evidence of proper competition preparation, with a spin-on oil filter conversion and custom aluminum overflow tank for the radiator. The general feel is one of simplicity, and it is easy to see why these cars provided much reliable service for their owners.

This car certainly has proven itself, and is now a ready to enjoy car that can be run in events usually requiring much more expensive machinery. Yet this car, with its light weight and diminutive size, is very fun, surprisingly competitive, and grin-inducing, for both driver and spectators. Moreover, unlike a 962, you can keep this in your living room!
