Vintage Mustangs are cool cars all by themselves, but add more power, sizzling red paint, and a big set of alloy wheels, and suddenly a good car becomes great. This 1967 fastback shows that the original design still has a lot of appeal, but there's always room for an upgrade. There's no avoiding that screaming red paint job, and there's quite honestly nothing better than a red Mustang fastback. With white Shelby-esque stripes, it takes on an aggressive demeanor, reinforced by the fiberglass hood with integrated scoop and hood pins and a chin spoiler borrowed from a Boss 302. Even a close inspection reveals few flaws, with outstanding prep and attention to detail; check out how the stripes wrap into the trunk opening and cowl area. The blacked-out grille is another Shelby-inspired piece with just a simple offset Mustang logo above the nicely chromed bumper. In fact, all the chrome is quite nice on this car, including things like the door handles and individual surrounds for the triple-element taillights, a Mustang trademark from the beginning. Everything on the fastback comes together very nicely, and if you hadn't already noticed, this car has the look! Inside, a nearly spotless black bucket seat interior shows a restorer's touch, not a customizer's wild imagination, something most Mustang fans will appreciate. The original gauges remain in place, keeping an eye on the upgraded powerplant under the hood, along with an auxiliary temperature gauge mounted down low. A Hurst cue ball shifter ensures no missed shifts in the Toploader 4-speed and a black leather wrap on the steering wheel makes it easy to grip. New seat covers, carpets, headliner, and door panels all add to the factory-fresh look, and basic black will never, ever go out of style. The only notable modification is the AM/FM/CD stereo head unit fitted in the dash, as well as the speakers throughout the passenger compartment. The great thing about Ford small blocks is that they're largely interchangeable. Where once lived a 289 now lives a snarling 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8, which is the one you want if your goal is horsepower. Fitted with 2-barrel heads with modest intake ports so it's friendly on the street with good torque, it's a great performer with a unique V8 bellow at full throttle. An Edelbrock 4-barrel provides the go-juice, but it's hidden under a stock-looking chrome air cleaner. In fact, the whole engine bay keeps a low profile with Ford Blue paint and a very OEM look, which is entirely the point. Power brakes were installed to help you harness the additional power, and underneath there are Shelby traction bars and upgraded sway bars, as well as a 9-inch rear with 3.25 gears, so it's actually pretty decent on the highway. Beautiful polished Eleanor wheels recall vintage Halibrands, and wear 245/45/17 performance radials. This pony is a mild resto-mod that emphasizes the Mustang's strong points and drives superbly.
