[This car is sold, but another is available] - The Europe Type 46 is one of the very first mid-engine GT in History, inspired by racing cars. Ultra-lightweight (600 kg), non-opening windows like in an aircraft, chassis integrated to the bodywork, this is a racing Lotus for the road offering incredible driving sensations.

The fibreglass monocoque, first tested on the Elite Type 14, is bonded to the steel chassis for best rigidity. Aerodynamics are extremely elaborated with a CX of only 0.29, exceptional for a road car, and integral underneath fairing on this version.

The racing Europa (Type 47) won at Brands Hatch for its first outing, and is avidly sought-after by Collectors. The Type 47 is closely derived from the early Europa S1 Type 46.

When Colin Chapman presented the Europ in 1966, after having won two F1 World Titles, it was a sensation : the first street-legal mid-engine Lotus had the same looks, driving sensations and ultra lightweight structure as racing cars.
The low-profile, sleek, timeless design was an immediate classic, and remains a reference for simplicity and aerodynamics efficiency.

The Renault Engine beefed-up by Chapman delivered enough power to bring the 600 kg Lotus GT to 125 mph. The car made no compromise : non-opening single-piece, 3D-curved windows, no door handles, single windhsield wiper...everything was designed for lightweight and efficiency. Road-handling was so close to a racing car that Rozinski, Editor of the French magazine Sport-Auto wrote : "A Sport-Prototype for the road" !

Only a few Europe S1 were made before Lotus was forced to add opening windows - with a less stylish two-piece side window arrangement.
A little after, for the Series 2, Chapman also had to go back to a more traditional but less rigid bolted chassis construction... Only the Series 1 / 1A and 1B, feature the integrated chassis, not merely bolted-on, but enclosed into the composite - a most advanced and uncompromised concept.

The legend of the madly daring Europe S1 was born.

The Series 1 is very different from Series 2 : the latter added sidelight signals awkwardly fitted on the nose, two-piece electric windows, separate chassis, and other modifications making it more conventional. This 2nd generation, with about 7000 built in several versions is very common on the market and do not compare to the Series 1 for elegance, lightness and Historic importance.

The magnificent matching numbers S1 example for sale may be the last still in existence in this highly original condition. A few dozens survivors are recorded in registries, but almost all are sadly modified with "tuned" bodywork, non-original engines and gearboxes, big wheels, "bling" interior, etc...

It is in very good condition, safely garaged in dry climate for all its life. Interior has not been restored and is very well preserved. A professional restoration has been performed on suspension and some technical elements (new head gasket, complete cleaning of carburettor and fuel tank, thorough cleaning of radiator and water circuit, new ignition coil, fuel pump, air and fuel filters, starter engine, new rear light clusters, etc).

All details are authentic, from the (very rare) original steering wheel, to the seats, gearlever knob (often replaced by a wrong part) interior rear-view mirror, chrome wheel hub caps, etc.

This Europe had spent all its life in Italy, until we acquired it for its exceptional preserved condition. It is a perfect Classic Lotus investment, still affordable - whilst the previous model, Type 14 Elite is now worth between 80 and 100.000 Euros. Market for Classic Lotus in on the rise.

This early Europe S1 will be delivered with its spare wheel, jack lift, and with a History file including copy of Lotus Factory registry showing chassis & engine number, and date of delivery, spare parts and maintenance invoices, registration as Historic Vehicle by French FFVE, and copy of owner's manual.
