This 1951 Pontiac Chieftain is more than just a cool old car, it's your opportunity to own a car that's been on the big screen. Used in the filming of the upcoming film "Last Vegas" starring Robert DeNiro, Kevin Kline, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Douglas, this is one car that truly offers movie-star looks. Movie history or not, this is a great-looking car. Combining the last of the old-school, pre-war curves with a sneak preview of what was to come in the later '50s, the slick coupe manages to be both sporty and formal at the same time. The two-tone gray paint job emphasizes the compact roof and long body, and remains in quite good condition with wonderful period patina. While we can't verify it, it's quite likely that the paint is the original, 62 year old stuff and it certainly shows off its California heritage with a soft patina, compliments of mild weather. Sure, there are a few nicks and scratches, but things are in amazing condition for such an original car. All the usual Pontiac styling cues are there, including the streaks running along the hood and deck lid, the indian-head hood ornament (yes, it still lights up), and the stars embedded in the stainless side trim. The chrome is in extremely impressive condition, possibly refinished at some point, but not to where it distracts from the rest of the car. One glance inside will convince you that someone really cared about keeping this one original. That's factory upholstery, and when it needed some TLC, they somehow managed to find vintage material that's an exact match and stitched it in place. Is it seamless? No, but it does show a dedication that many "restored" cars seem to overlook. The dash is pure jet-age cool, with a giant radio speaker that looks like an airplane's exhaust, and a slick pod of gauges ahead of the driver. Stylish bright trim on the door panels give a hint of things to come in the fabulous '50s, and the back seat is incredibly well preserved. More evidence of the car's easy life can be found in the steering wheel and horn button, which are in outstanding condition, and the carpets which show some very, very minor shrinkage but nothing that warrants replacement. Only the trunk appears to be reupholstered using matching gray carpet, and carries a full-sized spare. Pontiac's smooth, reliable, and utterly indestructible 268 cubic inch straight-eight got a compression boost in 1950 and was unchanged in '51, making 120 horsepower with the same creamy smoothness usually reserved for luxury cars. The engine bay is highly original, showing signs of careful maintenance but no trouble signs, and the electrical system has been upgraded to 12 volts, so it starts almost instantly. Paired with a 3-speed manual transmission, this Poncho is a fantastic highway cruiser that doesn't mind hitting the road. The chassis is shockingly clean, and a reproduction exhaust system gives it an appropriate muted rumble that sounds luxuriously powerful, and it glides along on the original suspension that's been lowered slightly to give it that awesome rake. Five Cadillac steel wheels have been finished to match the body and then fitted with hub caps and wide whitewall tires. Even without the celebrity connection, this is a fun, handsome, unusual car.
