Some guys build cars with lots of flash so that everyone thinks they're fast. Other guys just build their cars to be fast and let the appearance take care of itself. It's the latter philosophy that resulted in this fantastic 1966 Chevelle SS396, a perfect example of form following function. This car looks sinister doesn't it? And it's hard to explain where that vibe comes from, because it wears only factory sheetmetal, including the cool hood with the faux vents. Sure, the stance has a lot to do with it, and this sucker does sit right. With bright Marina Blue paint, it's quite an achievement to have the car come out looking this potent without resorting to SS stripes or other addons. Instead, they went with quality over flash, and it shows throughout. The quarters are straight, the door gaps are good, and the finish is about a mile deep from any angle, more evidence that someone was taking care of the details. And since this is a real code 38 SS396, correct SS emblems were fitted, including the blacked-out grille and 'Super Sport' badges on the flanks. Chrome and stainless is excellent throughout, and the entire package is very impressive. The interior was restored by the book to match the trim tag, including the bright blue buckets flanking a center console. Now, I wasn't checking out cars in 1966, but I have a hunch that they didn't look this good coming out of the factory. The seat covers, carpets, door panels, and headliner are all new and duplicate the originals exactly and workmanship is exceptional. Notable options include factory A/C, tinted glass, and the PowerGlide automatic, which has been supplanted by a 700R4 4-speed overdrive in this amazing piece. Other cool details include the "knee knocker" tachometer on the steering column, a dealer-accessory tissue dispenser under the dash, and the woodgrained steering wheel. The original gauges have been expertly restored, including the cool console-mounted clock, and while the factory AM/FM radio is in the dash, there's a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit stashed in the glove box. Nice! Performance is a no-brainer when you have 396 cubic inches to work with. This is in fact the car's original, numbers-matching L35, which was rated at 325 horsepower and now makes a few extra thanks to an L78-spec camshaft. The chrome air cleaner wears a reproduction decal that perhaps closer reflects the true rating, and the engine is beautifully detailed with near-flawless Chevy Orange paint. All the new gear under the hood means this car is ready to cruise, with that new power master cylinder linked to a set of 4-wheel vented and cross-drilled discs with bright red calipers. The aforementioned 700R4 is linked to the original 12-bolt rear, making this car combat-ready. Custom spindles and springs give it that perfect stance, and those gorgeous Boss Motorsports wheels totally stuff the wheel wells with 18-inch Nitto radials. On the one hand, you have an incredibly restored SS396 that's extremely correct. And on the other, well, you have one of the nastiest street machines we've seen in months. Either way, you'll love it.
