There's no question that the deluxe phaeton, added in late 1930, created on of the most collectable Model As of all. With just 2229 built in 1931, it's the rarest, most desirable body style built that year, eclipsing even the convertible sedan and station wagon. This beautifully restored example is ready to tour, loaded with accessories and with lots of work recently completed. The big difference between the standard and deluxe phaeton is the number of doors-the deluxe has only two, giving it a sleeker, sportier look that was clearly built for style over practicality. It still offers the open-air experience that only a car with side curtains can deliver, but the ideal proportions make it one of the most handsome of all Model As. As such, this one has been treated to an expensive frame-off restoration and wears it proudly. The red and black paint scheme is faithful, highlighting the belt moldings and keeping the black fenders which were standard on all Model As. Stainless steel was used for almost all the trim, including the radiator shell with its 1931-only painted insert. You'll also find a ton of accessories on this one, including dual sidemounts with mirrors, wind wings, cowl lights, and a trunk rack with fitted trunk for touring. The stylish interior borrowed heavily from the upscale convertible sedan, offering a pair of bucket seats that tilt forward for rear seat access. Tan leatherette means it's bright and airy inside, and carpets add a luxurious touch that the stock rubber mat didn't supply. The controls are familiar, including the 1931 round speedometer, hard rubber steering wheel, and hub-mounted headlight switch. Matching door panels tie it together with the cream stripes on the dash (which is also the fuel tank), giving this Model A a very polished, sophisticated look. A nicely fitted tan canvas top appears to be quite recent, and comes complete with a matching set of side curtains, ideal for touring. As always, this Model A is powered by the reliable, torque 200 cubic inch inline-four, and what it lacks in sheer horsepower it makes up for in personality and performance. The A is a light car, so the engine's performance is entertaining on the road, and it's able to easily keep up with today's traffic. On the open road, it's happiest at 45-50 MPH, where it pulls down decent fuel economy to boot. The engine is neatly detailed and offers a lot of correct features, from the flat copper spark plug leads to a new water pump with a sealed bearing so it won't leak like the original. Correct fabric hoses and clamps, an original generator, and proper Ford Green paint on the block give it the right look whether you're driving or showing. The 3-speed manual has light action once you've master the art of the double-clutch, and the mechanical brakes do a decent job of controlling the car's speed. Henry's tough and pretty 19-inch spoke wheels look great in matching red and carry a set of recent 4.75-19 Firestone whitewalls. Rare, fun, and still quite practical, this deluxe phaeton represents the very peak of the Model A food chain. It's also a ton of fun. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
