Engine Specifications: 1,212 CC Flathead 2-Cylinder Engine Single Carburetor 40 BHP at 4,700 RPM 3-Speed Hand-Shift Transmission Mechanical Drum Brakes Front Suspension Hydraulic Fork with Twin Springs Rear Suspension Dual Shocks About this Car: In 1945, Indian was purchased by The Ralph Rogers Group. After losing substantial ground to Harley-Davidson’s successful “Knucklehead” before the war, Rogers had post-war plans to revolutionize the Indian motorcycle with overhead-valve engines. The development of new models soon commenced, but it was the undoing of the marque. Issues of reliability crippled the company and production ceased in 1954. Being the last of the flagship model, the post-war Chiefs became legendary. This delightful duo of a 1947 Indian Chief Motorcycle and matching sidecar represent the American dream of free cruising on the open road. The Chief debuted in 1922 as the Indian Motorcycle Company’s flagship model and remained in nearly uninterrupted production until 1953. This example was built in 1947 and features the larger 1,212 cc flathead engine and three-speed transmission with right-hand shift on the tank and left-hand throttle control – the first year of this particular configuration. The current owner of this wonderful Indian Chief motorcycle with matching sidecar purchased it in July 2008. Restored at some point prior, the maroon paint, though not original, is the correct factory color for this bike. The accessory sidecar was recently trimmed and repainted to match by Antique Auto Restoration of Seaside, California, producing a beautifully coordinated running pair. The motorcycle bears the soft patina of a well-cared-for travel companion and was recently serviced, including a carburetor rebuild, charging system overhaul, and complete light system check. Offered with an owner’s manual, this lovely Indian Chief is ready for its next grand adventure.
