A talented engineer and businessman, Lago had held multiple positions with automotive industrial firms, including the Wilson Self-Changing Gear Company, which brought him into close contact with the management of Sunbeam Talbot Darracq. As the company was nearing closure, Lago was able to gain control of the French factory with a plan to update and revitalize the Talbot product line. When Lago took over, he sought to infuse modern designs and technology into the new line of Talbot-Lago automobiles through the construction and campaigning of race cars.
