Engine Specifications: 428 CID “Cobra Jet” OHV V-8 Engine Single Holley 4-Barrel Carburetor Over 335 BHP at 5,200 RPM 4-Speed “Top-Loader” Manual Gearbox Front Disc and Rear Drum Brakes Parallel-Wishbone Front Suspension with Coil Springs Live Rear Axle with Semi-Elliptical Leaf Springs About this Car: This Car In 1968, with the Detroit muscle car movement at full tilt, Shelby’s offerings stood toe to toe with all challengers. Upon its debut, the GT 500 KR was rated at 335 bhp, though actual output has been stated to be closer to 400 bhp. The KR ran a 5.5 second 0–60 mph and a very respectable 13.7 in the quarter mile. This Lime Gold GT 500 KR is documented in the Shelby American Registry as having been delivered new to the prominent McFayden Ford dealership in Omaha, Nebraska, the only Shelby distributor in the state. The earliest known owner of this original four-speed fastback, numbered 03335, was Wayne Goff of Omaha; it later passed to David Farrell, also of Omaha. In early 2008, Mr. Farrell sold his Lime Gold Shelby to the consignor, a Northern California collector who had been looking for a four-speed Shelby fastback to restore. Soon after his purchase, the Shelby was shipped to noted restorer Tim Thorpe in O’Fallon, Illinois. Tim and his crew at Thorpe’s Body and Corvette Shop performed a thorough restoration, returning the car to its as-delivered condition. The exclusive Shelby 10-spoke alloy wheels were added during the restoration and are ideally outfitted with Goodyear white-letter bias-ply tires. Numerous photographs document the restoration process and showcase the quality of workmanship at every step. Inside and out, this GT 500 KR presents beautifully, with factory-style production markings and inspection stamps appropriately placed on the correct, primer-finished underside. Since the completion of the restoration in 2009, great care has been taken to keep the Shelby in top form, which appears today in show-ready condition. The engine bay is noteworthy with its proper Autolite battery, appropriate decals and fittings, and factory-correct finishes on the Cobra Jet engine itself. At its only concours outing, it earned a class award before an appreciative crowd at the Serrano Concours in Sacramento, California. On a recent test drive, the fastback was found to start on the button and performed flawlessly; the prodigious power of the 428 Cobra Jet coupled with the four-speed manual performed beautifully. The power front disc brakes were found to be handy as well. Undeniably capable in straight-line performance, the GT 500 KR is also well suited to modern-day driving and is sure to attract a loyal following wherever it is shown. With its superb, photodocumented restoration, ideal original color scheme, manual gearbox, and power options, this outstanding example is a Shelby that any collector would be proud to own.
