Ferrari unveiled the new Testarossa at the 1984 Paris motor show which marked the end of production for the Boxer that had been the flagship 12 cylinder Ferrari model for the previous ten years. Styled by Pininfarina, the Testarossa paid homage to the great 50's sports racer that originally bore the name which translates as 'Red Head'; the rocker covers being painted red. The mid engine, rear wheel drive configuration allowed the centre of gravity to be positioned in the middle of the car with weight distribution 40% front and 60% rear thus achieving excellent cornering and road holding ability. The Testarossa was produced with 16'' 5 spoke 'Star' alloy wheels and disc brakes were fitted all round with 309mm discs at the front and 310mm at the rear.
The Testarossa was larger than its Boxer predecessor; half a foot wider and some 2.5 inches longerwhich allowed more leg room. In addition, the temperature inside the cockpit was reduced as twin radiators were mounted in the rear, unlike the Boxer where the single front mounted radiator had plumbing from the bonnet to the engine behind the seats which made the cabin very hot, especially on a warm day. The distinctive side vents were as useful as they were visually striking, allowing excellent engine ventilation and helping to give the car its unique styling.
Originally supplied as a UK designated car in righthand drive configuration, this most recognisable Ferrari is described by the vendor as in excellent order throughout. As with all of these Italian redheads, the service history is all important and there is no shortage of paperwork documenting this; every MoT test certificate, tax disc and invoice is included in the accompanying file.
The cambelts were changed in 1990, 1994, 1999 with cambelts and tappets adjusted again in 2001. A new clutch was fitted in 2005 with cambelts and again in 2006 along with an immobilizer. Cambelts again in 2009 and 2010 with a clutch and gearbox re-build in 2011 as well as a new and up-rated limited slip differential, engine rebuild with up-rated competition head-gaskets. The cylinder heads and fuel injection were also overhauled. Servicing according to the schedule has taken place throughout its life so far including a braking system overhaul just last year. Presented in classic Rossa Corsa with contrasting cream leather interior, it should be noted that that the transmission tunnel and dashboard still retain the original brown leather upholstery unlike many other examples where they have been changed to black.
An excellent, fully functioning and well cared-for example.
Interested parties should note that the registration shown on the images is not included with the car but is offered for sale within the automobilia section of this catalogue. A new, age-related number plate will be supplied.
