Filled with confidence, the company utilized its strong overseas connections and the increasing American interest in smaller cars to launch the Pinin Farina designed Metropolitan in 1954. The launch of what was America’s first compact automobile coincided with the creation of AMC, following Nash’s acquisition of the Hudson Motor Car Company. Nash’s foreign connections were evident in its decision for the Metropolitan to be manufactured in England by Austin, using one of Austin’s own engines. Upon its launch, the Metropolitan was well received in the US, with several thousand finding buyers in its first few months of production. In 1956, AMC installed a larger, more powerful 1490 cc engine in the Metropolitan, which delivered 52 bhp. The company also added a chrome slash down the side of the car, enabling a two-tone paint scheme. By 1958, AMC had launched a second generation of this fun and charming automobile. This 1958 Metropolitan 1500 benefits from the higher-powered engine and looks polished in its original color scheme of Frost White and Berkshire Green, giving the car true 1950s flair. The coupe has undergone a no-expense-spared ground-up restoration. The extensive cosmetic restoration work included a total strip-down and media blasting inside and out, taking the bodywork to bare metal before being refinished in its charming original livery. A glance at the underside reveals the fanatical level of effort that has been lavished on this charming mid-century compact. Following suit, the engine has been through an extensive rebuilding process, that included itting new pistons, connecting rods, a rebuilt cylinder head with hardened valve seats, and new valve guides. Continuing the thorough list of work this automobile has benefited from, the original bumpers, front grille, and trim have been re-chromed to a very high standard. The brake system was similarly renovated, including the installation of steel lines, rubber hydraulic hoses, brake shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, hold-down springs, as well as new rubber seals for the doors and windows. The black-and-white vinyl and cloth interior is as it was when this automobile rolled off the production line. Five new BF Goodrich Silvertown tires ensure this Metropolitan is “on the button” and complete the original look of this wonderful Anglo- American-Italian hybrid. This beautifully restored second-generation Metropolitan is ready to be enjoyed by its next caretaker and would make a thoroughly entertaining and competitive entry at any local concours.
