Engine Specifications: 1,897 CC SOHC Inline 4-Cylinder Engine Twin Solex 44PHH Carburetors 105 HP at 5,700 RPM 4-Speed Manual Gearbox 4-Wheel Hydraulic Drum Brakes Independent Double-Wishbone Front Suspension Rear Swing-Axle Suspension with Coil Springs About this Car: The exquisite 190 SL presented here is the finest restored example we have had the pleasure to offer. According to a copy of the factory delivery sheet, this 190 SL was constructed in September 1957 and originally finished in the distinctive color scheme of Elfenbein (DB-608) with green leather upholstery and a black soft top. In 2006, the current owner acquired the 190 SL and, upon learning of its rare original specifications, embarked on a complete restoration that would return the Mercedes-Benz to its spectacular, as-delivered appearance. Initially, the consignor commissioned marque specialist Bruce Adams of 190 SL Services in Southern Pines, North Carolina, to perform a ground-up restoration. Early in the process, the consignor and his business partner Dave Polny took over the well-established restoration firm, and this 190 SL became the showpiece for the shop’s new management. As a result, this car was treated to a no-expense-spared restoration of exceptional quality and accuracy. Once the car was disassembled, 190 SL Services carefully prepared the bodywork to show standards and Derby Custom Paint applied the elegant Elfenbein finish. Meanwhile, John Wright Custom Chrome refinished the brightwork and North Hollywood Speedometer restored the VDO instruments. The interior was entrusted to Sports Leicht Restorations, who trimmed the seats and door panels in the finest green leather hides. As this work was being carried out, Metric Motors of California performed a complete engine rebuild and Black Forest of Wisconsin overhauled the transmission and differential. To enhance the 190 SL’s presentation, a correct small-window hardtop was acquired, restored, and fitted to the car. Throughout the restoration, Dave Polny managed the project and oversaw final assembly to ensure that every aspect was done “by the book” to the same, or better, standards and specification of Mercedes-Benz in 1957. A comprehensive file of documentation supporting the exacting nature of the work performed is included with the sale of the car. Finished in its factory-delivered color scheme, this 190 SL possesses a wonderfully authentic character that adds a unique presence to any collection or show field. In keeping with its eye-catching outward appearance, the engine compartment, trunk, and undercarriage are highly detailed, with close attention paid to authentic finishes and fittings. The presentation of this magnificent car also includes two sets of wheels: a “show” set with whitewall bias-ply tires and a “go” set with Michelin X radial tires. Additionally, there are two sets of hubcaps: one finished in Elfenbein for when the car is used as a roadster and the other finished in black to complement the accessory hardtop. The 190 SL is further outfitted with owner’s handbooks, a set of original tools, and three pieces of fitted luggage trimmed in the same high-quality leather used for the interior. In September 2011, the Elfenbein roadster was exhibited at the International 190 SL Group Convention in Charlottesville, Virginia, where it was fully scrutinized by a team of knowledgeable judges. A proud testament to the quality and accuracy of its restoration, this car was selected from a competitive field as Best in Show and the astounding 500 point score earned it the prestigious Gold Award. Beyond its impressive outing at the 190 SL Group Convention, this car has earned a noteworthy streak of honors, including AACA First Junior, Senior, and Grand National Awards, First in Class at the Mercedes-Benz StarFest, Best in Class at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, a Swan Award at the Lake Mirror Classic, as well as a Platinum Award at the Winter Park Concours d’Elegance. Since the restoration was completed in 2010, the 190 SL has been driven approximately 100 miles and has always been meticulously maintained in show-ready condition. For the discriminating collector who seeks only the very best, the immaculate 190 SL Roadster offered here presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest Mercedes-Benz of the 1950s.
