Chrysler introduced its first 300 model in 1955. Ford had the Thunderbird, Chevrolet had its Corvette, but Chrysler didn’t have a two-seat quasi-sports car and couldn’t afford to develop one, yet definitely wanted to compete. So the company took a different tack and decided to build the fastest stock sedan available on the market. With that, the Chrysler C300 was born – named after its 300-hp Hemi engine – and subsequently spawned the highly regarded Chrysler 300 “letter series.” The 300s were high-performance luxury cars produced in very limited numbers from 1955 to 1965. Elegant and elite as they were, Chrysler 300s were known for speed, engineering, and NASCAR victories in which the checkered flag became a familiar friend waving past multiple victories. Performance enthusiasts loved them. The 1960 Chrysler 300 F’s styling presented an aggressive, no-nonsense stance. Outward- slanting fins and the overall feeling of power clearly implied that the standard 375- or optional 400-hp engine – part of a high-performance package – would deliver everything its looks suggested. Most 300 Fs were equipped with a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, but no more than nine sported a Pont-A-Mousson four-speed manual gearbox. The 300 F was also the first letter car to feature unibody construction for better assembly quality and a marked improvement in rigidity. Chrysler produced the 1960 300 F in hardtop
