Maserati's first four door model made its debut in 1963. The new car, known as the Quattroporte - meaning "four doors", had a graceful saloon body and was powered by a 4.1 litre V8. The V8 featured the usual quad cam-shafts, four Weber carburettors and a choice of manual or automatic transmission. Following the restructure of Maserati in 1978 a new four door model appeared, the Quattroporte III. This time the Quattroporte had a proper V8 engine, unlike the previous Mk II model produced from 1975-77. The engines were the same Maserati units used in the Kyalami; this meant either a 4.1 litre or 4.9 litre quad-cam V8.

The Quattroporte III offered restrained, understated styling by Ital design and a luxurious interior to cocoon its wealthy occupants. The Quattroporte III remained in production until 1983. Driven through an automatic gearbox and with metallic brown paintwork over brown leather interior, this example has had just careful owners. Complete with German documents, this extremely honest example of Maserati's four door variant is true classic 1980's chic.
