| The E9 BMW 3.0 CSL was the first in a long line of Motor Sport cars from this successful manufacturer. Built around a light weight shell from Karmann, fitted with aluminium doors, bonnet and boot lid. Only 500 RHD cars were built and cost more than a Porsche 911 2.7 RS Carrera when new.
For 1973 they were homologated with an over-bored engine and aerodynamic aids, the famed Batmobile was born.
This car was one of only two RHD's supplied from BMW with the over-bored engine and 5 speed gearbox as verified by BMW Mobile Tradition. The aero package was supplied by BMW to be fitted by the customer as it was illegal for road use in Germany. Delivered to its first owner by BMW Mayfair, an Australian working in London. He brought the car back here when he returned in the late 1970's. The car had a full body restoration in the early 1990's and a 3.5 litre Motor sport engine fitted. Since then the car has own many awards and trophies for its excellent condition.
The car retains all of the features that made the CSL a special car. The Scheel light weight seats, leather bound three spoke steering wheel and correct carpet with out under-felt. Bilstien suspension with front and rear sway bars, ventilated disc brakes all round, limited slip rear axle, fuel injection, wide Alpina alloy wheels and those all important alloy panels.
One of my all time favourite motor racing photographs is of Hans Stuck in a CSL at the Nuremburg Ring completely air-borne, all 4 wheels off the ground. Great stuff!
