An aesthetic masterpiece, the Giulietta Sprint didn't start out a priority for Alfa Romeo, however. Having fallen behind with the 1300 saloon project, the manufacturer decided to launch the coupé version first, at the Turin Motor Show in 1954, to appease the clientèle. A Bertone design was chosen for the twin-cam 1300 engine developed from the1900 version. The Giulietta Sprint produced 65 bhp, remarkable for such a small engine size at that time, and weighing just 850kg, the car could reach speeds of over 160 km/h. Attractive, sporty and elegant, the car proved to be a great success, and orders rolled in. For clients wanting a sporting model, Alfa presented the Sprint Veloce in 1956, sporting an 80 bhp engine with two carburettors that increased to 90 bhp in 1959. Just 3,000 examples of this model were built, making it a rare car.

 

According to the Alfa Romeo Centro Documentazione certificate, included in the file, the Giullietta Sprint Veloce on offer left the factory on 29 July 1961 and was sold to Algiers on 3 October the same year, painted light Iseo blue. In 1978 the car was bought by M. Emperaire from Nice, and between 2003 and 2007 it was owned by M. Mourrier. He sold it to M. Guitton in 2007, and the current owner acquired the car from Guitton in 2012. A comprehensive file of bills, dating back to 1990, comes with the car, and we suggest potential bidders study this. It shows the car was restored in 1990 by the Ricord Alfa Romeo garage in Nice, renowned specialists at that time. The engine, gearbox and bodywork were all refurbished. Some years later, in 2003, a complete engine rebuild is noted in the file, carried out by Alfa specialist VEC Racing. In 2005, the brakes were overhauled and brake linings replaced. In 2007 an alternator discreetly took the place of the dynamo, and the starter motor was replaced.

Still presented in charming blue livery, with grey and blue velour interior, original engine (matching numbers), and authenticated by Alfa Romeo, this Giulietta Sprint Veloce offers elegant coachwork combined with the brio of a fantastic engine. This is a rare, exclusive car, and a recognised classic welcomed at the most prestigious motoring events.
