After the Arrow and Great Arrow brought George N. Pierce his first major success in the car business during the very first years of the twentieth century, he renamed his company Pierce-Arrow in celebration. From this point, the company would go on to reach the peak of design excellence and gain a reputation for building fine motorcars that has long outlasted the company itself. By the mid-1920s, Pierce-Arrow was already highly regarded and achieving sales in excess of 5,000 cars, but the company still had insufficient finances to develop more interesting new models. More or less acquired by Studebaker in 1928, Pierce-Arrow was able to take advantage of the additional resources to produce a new eight-cylinder engine later that year and a Karl Wise-designed V12 in 1932. For 1933, a 462 ci V12 was introduced with 175 horsepower and a more advanced hydraulic valvetrain. The large and powerful but robust engine took Ab Jenkins in a Pierce-Arrow Twelve to 79 world records at Bonneville, where he drove for over 25 hours straight at an average of 117 miles per hour. Such a well-engineered car was made even more attractive by its value as a twelve-cylinder priced competitively with many eights. A former award winner with both the CCCA and AACA, this 1933 Pierce-Arrow Twelve Convertible Coupe still presents exceptionally well in sharp, showable condition. Finished in red with a handsome black beltline rib and fenders, it also features a tan cloth convertible top, red painted wire wheels, wide whitewall tires, dual enclosed sidemounts, Trippe driving lights, dual chrome plated horns, luggage rack, rumble seat, golf bag door and beautiful archer radiator mascot. The tan leather interior trim, upholstery and carpets match the top, and overall it is a gorgeous package. This car has also run and completed the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic from Seattle, Washington down the coast to Pebble Beach. It is therefore not only a showable car with awards to its credit, it is also a proven tour car. A strong, beautiful and versatile classic Pierce-Arrow with that wonderful V12 under its long, purposeful hood, it has much to offer the discerning collector.
