This very special one-owner Dino boasts impressive originality in addition to extremely rare options. Built in November 1972, chassis no. 04970 was specified as a US example equipped with power windows and air- conditioning. Most importantly, this Dino was factory fitted with fender flares and Daytona seats, as well as the desirable 7 1/2" Campagnolo alloy wheels. Denny Schue’s renowned Dino Register suggests that fewer than 250 Chairs & Flares Dinos were made, almost all of which were open- top GTS examples. This car is believed to be one of just five Chairs & Flares coupes distributed to the US, a distinction of extreme rarity. Retailed by S.W. Griswold & Co. in Berkeley, California, this Dino GT was originally slated for sale to the son of a local businessman who ultimately did not take delivery. Unexpectedly available, the Dino appeared on the showroom floor only briefly before being spotted by the consignor, who had just been promoted to the rank of major in the US Air Force. Treating himself to a present, the consignor purchased the Ferrari in 1973. Recognizing the merits of his special Dino, the owner drove it minimally, careful to never use the car in the rain. Briefly entering retirement in 1976, the consignor invested in a local Goodyear franchise, and the Dino is depicted in a period photograph parked at his shop. Later that year, the Ferrari returned to Griswold for a bare-metal repaint in its original color, the only cosmetic restoration the car has ever undergone. During his retirement the consignor began racing seriously, campaigning a Porsche 911 RSR in the SCCA Trans-Am and IMSA GTO series. His crew chief, former Ferrari specialist Greg Hurt, was a natural fit for maintenance duties on the Dino until 1981, when the owner returned to duty in the US Air Force. Assigned to Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas, the consignor transported the Dino to his new home, and the car was subsequently serviced as needed by well-known Ferrari specialists FAF Motorsports in Tucker, Georgia. Retiring from the military once again in 1988, the owner moved to Florida, where he was delighted to join the regional FCA chapter and display his well-preserved Dino at club events. He would occasionally take 04970 to track gatherings, including one at Sebring. His racing licenses with the SCCA and FIA enabled him to run hot laps at Sebring, where he reveled in the Dino’s tight connected handling and its delightful drifting characteristics, to the chagrin of his wife! A Bondurant School of High Performance Driving participation sticker remains affixed to the car, bearing a number “1” in the center, recording that the consignor had finished the day at the head of his class. Displaying approximately 30,800 original miles at the time of cataloguing, this wonderfully authentic Dino features its original matching- numbers mechanical components and has been repainted just once. With the exception of the floor mats, the interior remains completely original. In addition to enviable preservation and the rare option combination, this Chairs & Flares Dino is documented by a continuous 40-year insurance policy and offered with original manuals and keys, US-version instruction booklet, and an original tool kit. This exquisite Ferrari checks all of the boxes in terms of provenance, raising the bar for a time-capsule Dino. With single ownership, overwhelming originality, minimal mileage, and Chairs & Flares appointments, 04970 represents the apogee of Dino collecting, promising a warm reception at FCA meets, finer Italian car shows, and national concours.
