1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Coupe
s/n 198.0406500022, Engine No. 198.9801000280
DB 534 Fire Engine Red with Tan Interior

The 300 SL Gullwing is probably the most widely recognized classic car in the world. At the time it was introduced, it represented innovation never before attempted in the motorcar industry, and today, few cars are as iconic.

First used as the Copenhagen Auto show car in August of 1956, this car was shipped the US shortly after. It was delivered new in its current Fire Engine Red paint color, and with fawn vinyl and plaid interior. It`s now fitted with much more tasteful tan leather interior and correct Mercedes tweed carpets. At some point engine number 198.980550908 was removed and replacement engine 198.9801000280 installed. This swap occurred many years ago. This example is fitted with steel wheels with aluminum outers. Currently the car is best described as a mechanically excellent and extremely straight driver with very good interior and average paint. Currently the car shows 85,550 kms, which is believed to be 185,550.

The current owner has performed much mechanical work. The fuel injectors and injector pumps have been rebuilt, along with the wheel cylinders, and master cylinders. The gas tank was removed and restored. A complete valve job was performed, and a new stainless exhaust system fitted. The entire wiring harness has been replaced by a previous owner. New Michelin 205/75R15 tires have also been installed.

The body is extremely straight was excellent door fit and no evidence of damage or repairs. The paint generally makes a strong impression, but up close, imperfections are noticeable. The window glass, including the windshield (which has been replaced) is very good. The chrome bumpers trim, emblems, and window frames, are all straight with zero pitting or deterioration.

The interior has been restored and is in very good condition. All the gauges, dash paint, and interior chrome is all like new. The white plastic steering wheel has been restored. The seats and dash leather are excellent, as are the recently replaced carpets. The headliner, though correct material, has minor discoloration.

The engine compartment has seen a significant amount of detail work. While not totally prepared for show, it is well above the level expected from a `driver`. The trunk is has been restored several years ago. The underside is representative of an older restoration, with evidence of much recent work apparent. There are no belly pans.

With the car come the jack and spare wheel.

In all, this is marvelous example of this most historic automobile. Mechanically, it is fully sorted and drives accordingly, yet is not too nice to be used as regularly and extensively as you like.
