Black with black top, tan leather and Zebrano wood trim. 59,900 miles. Chassis #180030N8504204.

This is one of the last 220S Convertibles made before the factory added fuel injection to the series. Just 2,178 cars were made for model years 1956-59. The coupes and convertibles were made almost entirely by hand, costing 70% more than the sedans, and double the price of a Cadillac in 1958. The trim was solid brass, fitted to each car, then sent out for chrome plating. The interiors were trimmed in leather and rare wood veneers. The wood trim in this series is the most lavish of any Mercedes model, before or since. With superb engine and driveline isolation and the 6-layer padded top, these cars were exceptionally quiet at elevated cruising speeds. Properly restored, they are capable of cruising quietly at 80mph today. The reliable 2.2 liter overhead-cam six is the same as used in the sedans, assuring parts availablity and serviceablility.

Our 220S was delivered in late 1958 to the USA distributor, and, we are told, was given as a prize in Las Vegas. It then went to a Doctor in Montana. Records suggest it was last registered in 1972 at 58,730 miles, then stored. It was purchased in California by the most recent owner in 1994, and a 9-year restoration began.

The automobile was completely taken apart to do a bare-tub restoration. All mechanical components were removed, replaced or rebuilt, then painted, plated or powder-coated as appropriate. Jurgen Klockemann was responsible for the final assembly with leading California specialists doing various subcontract work. These include engine builder DDM who blueprinted the engine, Walter Odemer for the radio, White Post for the brakes, Will Samples for the Solexs, Time Valve for the SS exhaust, Christiansen for the chrome plating, and The Works for the $23,000 body and paint in Glasurit enamel.

Exceptional attention to detail resulted in a first prize at the 2005 Palo Alto concours; the only show appearance of this car.

With such a thorough mechanical restoration and superb craftsmanship of the body, this is not just a trailer queen. It should make a great weekend event car.

Documentation includes original invoice, ownership and restoration history, owner's manual packet.
