Few cars have captured a nation‘s imagination more than the Ford Mustang did when it was introduced in 1964. The original pony car, the Mustang established itself as one of the cult cars of the Sixties, thanks in part to its numerous high-visibility roles in a number of Hollywood films. Available in convertible, notchback and fastback guise, with 2.8 or 3.3 litre straight six and 4.2 or 4.7 litre V8 engines, it was to prove one of Ford‘s greatest ever sellers. In fact, the Mustang had the most successful car launch in automobile history, selling, in its first eighteen months, more than one million cars.

If the Mustang was a popular car before, then the 1968 Steve McQueen film Bullitt turned it into an overnight legend. In one of the most spectacular car chases ever seen in a motion picture, Steve McQueen‘s maverick cop wowed audiences as he pursued two hit men in a high-speed chase through the streets of San Francisco. The resulting scene promptly became an unforgettable part of cinematic history, and cemented the Mustang in the public consciousness in a way which no other car had ever managed, save perhaps for the Aston Martin DB5‘s appearance in Goldfinger four years earlier.

The car on sale here is an original V8, four speed manual Fastback Mustang that has been built into a replica of Steve McQueen‘s famous car. Built at Ford‘s Metuchen, New Jersey, plant in 1967, this car has recently been the subject of a full bare metal, rotisserie restoration. Included in this was replacement of any damaged or rusted body panels. In addition, all chrome and bright work was replaced with new parts, a complete new deluxe interior fitted, including wood grain dashboard and door panel inserts, new carpet and seat covers, and the rare overhead console with integrated map lights. Replicating the original Bullitt Mustang, the exterior is finished in the correct Highland Green Metallic paint supplied by Dupont, and, as per the film car, it is devoid of any insignias and has blacked-out grille and tail lamp details. American Torque Thrust D wheels, 15in x 7in front and 15in x 8½in rear, with white lettered BF Goodrich tyres, complete the look. Mechanically, the car has been fully rebuilt into a very powerful machine. The original small block 289 V8 has been discarded in favour of the true Bullitt car‘s 390 big block. This was rebored, the crankshaft reground, new pistons and bearings fitted and all reciprocating parts were then fully balanced. The engine build included fitment of full CNC-machined Edelbrock aluminium heads, new timing chains, new Stage 2 crower camshaft and tappets , Edelbrock dual plane aluminium manifold and an Edelbrock 750 CFM carburettor. A new electronic billet distributor and ignition box complete an engine that far outperforms the original. To handle this power, a new 11 inch performance clutch assembly, fully rebuilt original Mustang four speed, top-loader gearbox and an overhauled nine inch rear axle were also fitted. A full front and rear disc brake package by Wilwood adds the performance braking required to handle the raw power of the up-rated engine. This is a car that looks, sounds and performs in the true spirit of the Sixties American muscle cars which the Bullitt Mustang represented so well on film 40 years ago. Supplied with American registration papers and complete Marti report, confirming original build details, this is a superb opportunity to live the dream of driving a perfect replica of the world‘s most famous Mustang.
