The classic and nowadays much sought-after Ferrari 246 Dino GT was named after Enzo Ferrari‘s son Alfredino, who died in 1956, aged 24 years. Enzo Ferrari credited his son with the inspiration for a series of successful small and medium capacity V6 racing engines built by Ferrari from 1956, and in turn the name was given to a new line of mid-engined production Ferrari V6 coupés which first went on sale in 1969 with the two litre 206 Dino GT. The definitive 246 Dino, with its 2.4 litre V6 engine, appeared in late 1969, and its 195bhp at 7,000rpm and 160lb/ft at 5,500rpm provided a top speed of 141mph and zero to 60mph acceleration in 7.9 seconds.

Designed by Pininfarina, the delightful bodywork was built in steel by Scaglietti. It covered a straightforward chassis of tubular steel which carried wishbone/coil spring independent suspension at each corner. The compact engine, with four chain-driven overhead camshafts, was mounted transversely above the five-speed gearbox and just ahead of the rear axle line, allowing both a comfortable cockpit and usable boot space. With its flexible engine, uncomplicated chassis and outstanding handling, the 246 Dino GT is a car to combine the best of both worlds; it is a practical Ferrari. Fewer than 4,000 were built (about 1,200 of them the detachable roof Spyder GTS version) before the introduction of the slightly larger, and completely re-styled V8 engined 308 Dino in 1973.

Garaged daily and rarely used but regularly maintained, this Dino is finished in red with a black interior and has benefited from recent cosmetic attention to the body, paintwork and interior trim. This lovely Ferrari, with a mere and genuine 33,000 miles recorded, is presented in good condition and supplied with a V5 registration document, assorted servicing/maintenance bills, MoT test certificates dating back to 1987 and a current one. Since March of this year £5,000 has been spent including amongst many other items; new fuel lines, hoses, spark plugs, rubber seals to the boot, re-fitment of the driver’s door and gearbox and engine oil replaced. In short the car has been fettled the last few percentage to make this a highly desirable example, complete with ‘personalised’ registration, of this most sought after of Ferraris.
