The first cars to bear the name of Enzo Ferrari appeared only 50 years ago, but in that time they have built a legend for delivering uncompromising performance from their V12 power units whilst clothed in some of the most exciting and elegant Italian coachwork designs. From the earlier 275 GTB/4 a natural development was the larger engined 365 GTB/4 (Commonly known as the Daytona after the 1-2-3 victory in the 24 hour race of 1967) and this was the swan song for the successful front-engined Berninetta series. The deliberately aggressive shape styled by Pininfarina and the uncompromising mechanical specification ensured its success in the very demanding sports car market.
Chassis number 13791 is a very early car, featuring the striking wraparound "Plexiglas” noseband enclosing headlamps and indicators. This archetypal late ‘60s design quirk was soon deleted on later cars, as in America it did not comply with pedantic US height requirements. Consequently the rarer and more attractive "Plexiglas” cars, such as this one, are the most desirable and collectable today.
This magnificent example is described as being in excellent condition in every respect and has covered less than 21,000 miles from new. Finished in Blue Scuro and trimmed in beige and blue hide, this outstanding car drives as well as it looks, as was proven in a magazine test drive (a copy of which is included), making this one of the finest examples of one of the most collectible production Ferraris.
Delivered from new to a Mr C R Bussey of Staffordshire in October of 1970, it received its 6000 mile service in November of 1972, and was later sold via Modena Engineering to a company in Ashford, Middlesex.
The car was repainted in its original colour and received a mechanical overhaul in 1984/5 at a cost of £15,000. During this time, the car was featured in the October 1984 edition of Sports Car Mechanics magazine.
In 1988, it was sold to a Mr Duffy from London. In 1995, it passed to a well-known Ferrari collector from the Channel Islands via factory agents Graypaul.
Air conditioning was fitted in 1993 and recent remedial work has kept the car in correct order and to date the car has cover only 20,260 miles from new.
This Daytona has had a cosseted existence, having been stored in a heated garage for many years and having seen very little use. Fitted with 9” rear wheels, this superb example of one of these much-loved classic Ferraris comes complete with original order and invoice from 1970, and is sure to please any lover of the marque. Buyers please note that the number plate shown has been retained by the current owner and is not included in the sale.
