By the late 1950s Enzo Ferrari had been producing limited edition road cars for nearly ten years, but was still concentrating mainly on competition models of various types. What he now needed, especially since Maserati had just introduced their first road car destined for ‘full-scale’ production, was a car that could be built in larger numbers and to a more uniform design. The 250 series of cars, which had begun with the 250 Europa GT back in 1954, provided the basis for this new model. Thus the new 250GT coupé was born in mid-1958. Its body was designed by Pininfarina and was very similar in appearance to the 250GT convertible introduced the year before, with the obvious exception of the fixed roof.

The new coupé was the epitome of understated elegance and power, and its design has hence stood the test of time far better than some of its quirkier relatives. The 250GT Pininfarina coupé, as it was fully titled, featured the classic Colombo 60° V12 engine displacing 2953cc and developing 240bhp at 7,000rpm. It was a great success for Ferrari and 350 were built before production ceased in Autumn. From then on Ferrari concentrated on the 250GT SWB as its mainstay fixed-head two-seater.

Chassis number 1957 GT was manufactured in 1960 and first registered in California. Having spent many years in the United States, always a big market for this immortal Italian firm, it was brought to Sweden in 2007 and subjected to sympathetic upgrades returning the car to highly original condition. In addition, recent work includes: new brakes, new interior carpets and a meticulous electrical overhaul, leaving the car in perfect running order.

Having now been completed to a high specification and with absolutely no rust, this car has a charming character whilst remaining in beautiful overall condition. Finished in the highly attractive colour scheme of black with black interior, this is a fine 250GT and having been imported into Europe comes with full EU papers and an impressive folder of bills and receipts.

An unmolested, stylish and highly original example of Ferrari’s legendary 250 GT with matching numbers, this Italian beauty comes complete with all-round disc brakes, a characteristic of the later examples, complete tool roll and the more desirable outside plug engine. With stunning Pininfarina coachwork, chassis number 1957 GT represents a unique opportunity to acquire one these graceful 250 GT coupes, of which only 351 were ever built.
