Every single mid-engined V8 Ferrari up to the brand new 488 GTB can be traced back to the 308 GT4. Bertone’s bold, angular car was the successor to Pininfarina’s svelte Ferrari Dino 246 GT, and with a transverse-mounted engine, the design allowed for a 2+2 seating layout.

Ferrari’s 308 GT4 is a wonderful car to drive, with a powerful and flexible 3.0-litre V8 and fully independent suspension, which allows for fast, relaxed and comfortable progress.

The Ferrari was a smash hit with the motoring press at the time, with Motorsport magazine’s 1974 road test concluding: ‘This must be the car for which nearly every Dino 246GT owner has been waiting’. Elsewhere, John Bolster writing in Autosport said, ‘It is delightful to drive and worthy of bearing that most famous name’.

Known History

This particular Ferrari 308 GT4 - chassis s/n 13200 - is a great example, finished in red (Rosso Corsa), with a two-tone brown hide and tan cloth interior and brown carpets. The Ferrari was specified when new with air-conditioning and a heated rear windscreen. The wheels have since been upgraded to period-correct 16-inch alloys, which afford enthusiasts a much wider choice of tyre, and fill out the wheel arches superbly.

This Ferrari 308 GT4 was first registered in August 1979, and the history file records the regular service work and necessary maintenance by a specialist in Essex during the early 1980s. By July 1984, the car was with an owner in Bedfordshire, and was looked after by GTC Engineering in Northamptonshire.

From 1987 to 1988, the 308 GT4 was subjected to a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration, with the expert panel work carried out by Bodylines in Buckinghamshire. From 1989 to 1997, the Ferrari drove barely 1300 miles before it was purchased by Mr Saunders of Henlow.

Mr Saunders was the founder of the Stondon Transport Museum, and the Ferrari 308 GT4 was surely the jewel of his collection. It was finally sold on in 2012. Since then, this Ferrari has needed only light recommissioning, and has also received a full body repaint in resplendent Rosso Corsa.

Chassis number 13200 now shows just 46000 miles from new, which is well documented by the excellent history file. Having spent much of its life being enjoyed and photographed by eager museum visitors, this lovely Ferrari 308 GT4 is now ready to drive and enjoy once again.
