The Pagoda is presented in an extremely rare color combination of triple black. This consists of black paint (Code 040), black MBTex interior (Code 131), and matching black hard and soft tops. This combination makes this Pagoda a very rare car. Options from the factory on this car are as follows: 401- single seats; 416- hardtops mounted; 426- power steering; 461- instruments in English; 491- USA version; 503- outside side view mirror, left; 515- Becker radio; 524- paint coat preservation; 598- heat insulated glass/ heated rear pane; 600- trim strips on hardtop; 669- mode of packing VE I; and finally 740- soft-top fabric, black. The original documents show that it was sold new from Gauthier Motors Inc. in Salem, Massachusetts to Toby Wilbur of Elliot, Maine. It is believed that the Mr. Wilbur either sold the car is 1972 to a resident in Vermont, or he moved there himself. In 1972 is was serviced by Vermont's only Mercedes-Benz dealer Auto Master Motor Company in Burlington. There the 36,000 mile service was completed and the factory warranty validated. As of 06/06/1972, 36,780 miles were recorded. On 03/04/1975, at 65,318 miles the same dealership completed the 63,000 mile service. The history until the year 2000 is not present. In this year it was purchased by Carl Pearson of Maine; and after he purchased it an $8,000 service was completed. It is believed that all the servicing through 2000 was purely mechanical and that no body repairs were completed. Mr. Pearson retained ownership and maintained servicing until it was sold to Cooper Classic Cars of New York. From here it was acquired by Mr. Pollack of New York City who then improved the car with a total suspension, steering and engine rebuild. This work was completed by Euro Tech Motors of Edgewater, New Jersey. During this time the interior was fitted with a newer stereo system and much of the chrome was refinished. This all took place about 4,000 miles ago. This particular example is reported to run and drive superbly, with all the braking systems working well also. During the restoration, Dyna Mat was added to the interior for a quieter ride. The engine was recently rebuilt; and the original books and tools are present.
