The ultimate 1950’s Dream Car, the 1953 Eldorado, was the car that put Cadillac at the pinnacle of American automotive luxury. As the flagship model of GM’s flagship brand and a bold statement of their design superiority, the Eldorado was a dream car in the truest sense – buyers of other GM products aspired to afford an Eldorado, though a hefty price tag of $7,286 meant that only the wealthiest individuals could actually afford to drive this spectacular new Cadillac. Initially, the Eldorado wore totally unique sheet metal and was essentially a hand-built special meant to highlight the talents of GM designers. There were fewer ways of showing people you’ve truly achieved success in the 1950’s than driving a Cadillac Eldorado. By 1957, the Eldorado was well established as a regular part of the Cadillac lineup, sharing the basic body with standard Series 62 models, but boasting vastly more trim and equipment. New for that year was Cadillac’s X-frame construction, which brought increased structural rigidity and helped to refine the Eldorado’s ride even more. For the Eldo, Cadillac’s 365-cubic inch V-8 lay under the hood; topped with two 4-barrel carburetors and produced a very healthy 325 brake horsepower, a 20 horsepower gain over the standard Cadillac engines. The big V-8 was mated to GM’s brilliant Hydra-Matic transmission –a unit that even Rolls Royce adopted for its superior shift quality. To complement the new mechanical components, the 1957 Eldorado also received a complete restyling, which was inspired by the Eldorado Brougham and Park Avenue show cars. Most noticeable was the distinct tail treatment that featured a sloping decklid punctuated with dramatic, shark-like fins. The aforementioned new chassis also allowed the body to sit lower than it did on earlier cars, reducing overall height and improving the visual impression on the road. Only 1,800 Biarritz Convertibles were produced that year, accounting for only a small percentage of total production. The gorgeous Dakota Red car offered here has been treated to a comprehensive, body off restoration and presents in beautiful condition. Beyond simply a cosmetic refurbishment, this example has been restored with reliability and usability in mind; it is no trailer queen, but rather an exquisitely restored car that can be - and has been - used with confidence. The correct Dakota red paint is straight and beautiful, and the extensive chrome and stainless trim have been polished or plated to a very high standard – a massive undertaking and huge expense when restoring these cars. The classic Eldorado Biarritz badges and emblems are correctly plated in gold. Rolling stock is a set of proper set of wide whitewall tires adorned with the iconic Sabre hubcaps, just one of the multitudes of jet-age styling influences of the period. Inside the luxurious interior, vast expanses of red leather have been expertly fitted. Red carpets, door panels and painted trim round out the iconic 50’s look. Of course there is plenty of chrome trim inside as well, along with a factory original radio, clock and an array of power accessories. A white convertible top contrasts the red paint and interior. In keeping with the quality of the cosmetic restoration, the engine bay detailing lives up to the rest of this gorgeous car. Correct colors and finishes adorn the engine and its ancillaries. It is tidy and clean, with signs of regular maintenance and use. Ready for driving and casual show, this fantastic 1957 Eldorado is a prime example of what is surely one of the most desirable Cadillac convertibles of its era, and was most certainly the ultimate convertible from 1957; one of the greatest years in history for American car design.
