The Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolets on the unit-body W180 chassis were built from December 1957 through September 1958, with 2,178 units produced. The successors on the W128 chassis, built from October 1958 through October 1960, were identical in all respects except for the engine change from carburetors to fuel injection. These elegant cabriolets, with their erect grilles, luxurious interiors, and flawless road manners, are the quintessence of Mercedes-Benz refinement, comfort, and reliability.

Purchased and titled by the first owner in 1959, it was sold to the second owner in 1976. The current owner bought the cabriolet in 1989 with 106,000 miles on the odometer. Over a two-year period, he had it completely restored by a specialist shop in New Hampshire, changing the colors from the original blue with a beige interior and soft top to the current attractive combination of Light Ivory (DB620) with red leather upholstery and Wilton carpets and a black top. The extensive wood trim that characterizes these elegant cabriolets was refinished to standards appropriate to a car that is intended to be driven rather than used strictly for show.

After its restoration, the present owner drove his Mercedes extensively on summer tours and at regional car shows, storing it during the winter months. The engine was completely rebuilt in 2007, but since then, the car has been driven only 2,000 miles, with the odometer now showing 125,000 miles. With decreasing use, the owner decided it was time for another enthusiast to enjoy this cabriolet. In 2014, the car was repainted to the same Light Ivory color. On the interior, the upholstery and carpeting were carefully detailed but still retain an attractive patina. The original clock and Becker radio are present but not currently functional. The original jack and Mercedes-Benz tool kit are included as well.

The car has also been extensively refreshed mechanically over the past 12 months, including rebuilding the Solex carburetors, clutch, brakes, fuel pump, and thermostat. The undercarriage and suspension have been completely detailed and serviced, including a new stainless exhaust system, Bilstein shock absorbers, and servicing and seals on the differential. Since the mechanical work, it has been road-tested, and the owner reports that it is ready to be driven with confidence.

This excellent example of the breed will be perfect for the owner who not only intends to drive and enjoy their automobile in comfort on long-distance tours rather than trailering it to show fields but also still wishes to make a statement on the road and upon arrival.
