The Austin-Healey, as no other car, capitalized on the success of British sports cars in America. The prewar-designed MG TD may have started it, and the postwar Jaguar XK 120 proved its considerable financial rewards, but it was Donald Healey and Leonard Lord of Austin Motors who realized, and exploited, its commercial opportunities.

Considered the original Austin-Healeys, the 100 BN1 and BN2 Series cars were built from 1953 to 1956, and equipped with a four-cylinder engine. Although more BN1 cars were built (more than 10,000), collectors today prefer the BN2 series, as they are rarer (about 4,500 cars) and fitted with a four-speed transmission with overdrive.

The pristine Healey we have the pleasure of offering here is one of the few 100 BN2 Roadsters that is fitted with the dealer-installed Le Mans performance kit. The kit
consists of a pair of 1 ¾-inch HD6 SU carburetors mounted on a special manifold, a high lift cam, stronger valve springs, a steel-faced cylinder head gasket, a special distributor and a cold air box.

According to the accompanying British Heritage documents, this lovely car is an original left drive example and finished in its original colors of Reno red with black seats and red piping, the Healey was also complete with the laminated wind screen and heater.

The restoration was done to concours standards beginning with the chassis, which was primed, sealed and painted with catalyzed enamel. All of the bodywork was done to the same standards and displays superb panel fit, a difficult feat to accomplish on these early four cylinder cars.

The complete drivetrain was carefully examined and although some work had already been done, anything found to need attention was carefully rebuilt, including the starter, generator, carburetors, distributor, water pump, radiator, clutch and all suspension, steering and brakes. The car is well-equipped, including proper matching fog lamps.

Upon completion, the car was entered for judging in a number of shows, winning many awards including Best in Show at the National Conclave, and Gold level certification. The finished car created such a sensation that it was featured on the cover of “Chatter”, the national Healey club magazine, and was the subject of the feature article inside.

For a number of years, this wonderful Healey was a trailered show car; after its acquisition by the vendor, a thorough program of sorting was undertaken to ensure that the car was reliable and fully functional. It is reluctantly offered for sale today as the size of the collection has exceeded the space available.

With its excellent provenance and award-winning restoration, this Healey represents the best of both worlds: a concours-ready car that has been fully prepared for street driving.
