A 1953 Jaguar XK 120 3.4 litre OTS Chassis number 661123 Engine number W9948-8
| The Jaguar XK 120 was perhaps the underpinning for the success of Jaguar. It was very popular and highly successful as an export model particularly to the USA and helped to create much needed revenue for Jaguar and Great Britain post Second World War. Because the car was so popular in the US left hand drive examples are quite common. Correspondingly few original right drive vehicles are to be found. Of the 1,118 right hand drive steel bodied roadsters built between 1949 and 1954 this superb example was the 54th last built with a date of manufacture of 5th October 1953.
It was despatched to the dealer Henlys of London on the 13th November 1953 with an original purchase price at the time of 1,275 pounds sterling including tax. Little of this vehicle's early history is known except that it shipped to the USA. It was last registered in Alabama and spent eight years in storage in Loiuisiana before being imported to Australia in 1989. 661123 then spent a further seven years in storage in rural NSW before emerging in 1996 to commence a 13 year restoration which was finally completed in August 2008. It quickly became known in Australia as "the Crocodile Car" for the patina of the dull exterior paintwork that after many years' exposure to the sun had become deeply cracked and crazed like crocodile skin. Despite the sorry state of repair the car was one of the most original, complete and un-restored examples available which provided its current owner with the dual opportunity of a valuable reference vehicle for authenticity and a restoration project where authenticity was readily verifiable.
Testimony to the quality, thoroughness and authenticity of the restoration is confirmed by the incredible array of awards immediately garnered including 2008 Gold Award, Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia 2008 XK Trophy, Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia 2008 Outright Winner, Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia 2009 Gold Award, Jaguar National Rally 2009 Lofty England Sporting Trophy, Jaguar National Rally 2009 Sir Nick Scheele Trophy, Jaguar National Rally 2009 Sir William Lyons Trophy, Jaguar National Rally 2009 Outright Winner, Jaguar National Rally 2009 1st Place 1951-1960 Cars, Shannons Eastern Creek Class 2009 Grand Champion, Shannons Eastern Creek Classic
It winning history culminated by the fact that Australian Classic Car Magazine confirmed it as the best car in Australia in its 2010 Awards. To this day this stunning matching numbers (as confirmed by the accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate) original right hand drive XK120 is still in concours winning condition having been meticulously maintained by its fastidious owner, and must be regarded as one of the finest examples available anywhere.
